At the other extreme, the Exasound remains excellent but we see difference in channels. Wonder if the display/microprocessor/digital input is closer to one channel than the other to cause that differing output. Yeah; this is a mains powered amp (rather than usb, or battery), that's one of the factors why I chose it. This is surely the (most) correct category. Interesting to see a dedicated protection circuit IC (C1237HA). This guards against shorts in the headphone output causing damage to driver IC. The Fostex did not and does not fare well on either dac amps. It is loud... BUT not loud enough. No oomph in the bass for example with both amps/dacs. With labor being so cheap in China, it makes economic sense for them to do that. In the video I posted you can see the lady sitting there taking out individual components (likely resistors) and putting them in their respective bins. Now I realise that this must be, for sure, transformer hum, as both these amps have theirs onboard (two, in the case of the H10). But, the X6's is external. Measured performance of the FX-Audio DAC-X6 is rather disappointing. It loses to similarly priced Fiio E10K and by a larger margin to Topping D30. Am I disappointed? Well yes and no. This is a nice AMP/Dac and for the price that I paid for it is very nice with the features and inputs. But it is not powerful enough especially for the stated specs. Maybe I will try the Monoprice DAC/Amp that states the power is about 900mw / 32Ω if I recall correctly. For a budget AMP/DAC of course.

To conclude, the FX-Audio DAC-X6 is an impressive headphone AMP and DAC, that noticeably improves sound quality. If you are looking for a budget AMP and DAC for headphones, the DAC-X6 is a brilliant choice. I'd like to say that the FX6 Dac/Amp is more comparable in power to 200mw / 32Ω like the FiiO E10k and not as stated in the specs for the product that has it showing as 910mw / 32Ω!What happened was this: the tonal balanced didn't really change at all, or it happened so imperceptibly that I can't tell the difference. But! The amount of detail doubled. Or tripled. Suddenly there is so much happening everywhere. So much air. So much detail. And it is a very smooth thing, too. There is no harshness to anything. You just find layers upon layers of texture in the instruments. The bass might be a smidgen more controlled than with the OPA2134, but it is very close. I've got another 'proper' rig, for my 'serious' listening. This dac-amp combo is just for computer media usage; mainly films, series, youtube etc. I would normally just plug straight into the laptop, for this. But the laptop's sound has a problem (thankfully only in the analogue domain). I have to use USB audio, now.

If they're bypassing the volume control, then I'd guess that they're bypassing the X6 dac/amp combi's amp section, altogether. The output is straight from the DAC part. The impulse response is also strange. Here is the graph for the X7 and also the Topping D10 impulse for a comparison. Doesn't it look like a minimal phase impulse VS a linear phase impulse? (measurements made via a Scarlett 2i4 2nd Gen and REW). As for other noise(s); I've not noticed anything. This, at least, suggests to me that the DAC-X6 isn't particularly sensitive to computer generated interference, via USB. Could you test the output with the gain jumpers ( https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/5rk667/fxaudio_dac_x6_gain_jumpers/) set to "high"?

It might change. But it could also be an issue only way to find out really is to plug a high ish impedance headphone into it. If you can I would return it and buy something more suited to lower impedance gear. IMO the only reason to buy the dac x6 these days is if you want to drive a 250 ohm Beyer for cheaply Hey, thanks for your input. I ended up followed what you said, plugging the speakers into the headphone out. That worked out quite well in the end.
