Well today our up! has just returned from the VW dealer and lo & behold it had to have a new heat shield fitted. As for them not being suitable because of the heat - if you're getting that high exhaust temps, the clips are the least of your worries!

I was browsing around to find some cat related stuff and apparently there's a voluntary service recall on this heat shield for some 07-08 2.5 models.Not to solid. It felt like kit kat wrappers as well.

They are a different type of part than the one used on the under bonnet sound proofing, so just buy some, but, be aware that in most cases, the original retainers will still be on the car but rusted up, and the reason that you are finding that the heat shield has fallen down is because it is made of some aluminium alloy kind of material, and these retainers are zinc'd steel - so that has started a reaction that has locally trashed the aluminium alloy material - and it has "gone" and the heat shield now has a big hole in it where originally it had a small hole for the retainer's stud to pass through. So that means that you will need to make up some thin metal disc patches/repair washers to cover these holes when you go to fit new retainers. I often use washers that are meant for pinning insulation. They kinda mould to the shape. I do use the hex nut type washers too but they are damn expensive for what they are! Haven't heard rattle (maybe just wan't looking for it and wrote it off as "cold start noise"??) but was cleaning under the hood a bit today and noticed that my shield is only holding onto 1 bolt while other isn't doing anything at all lol. All the "filler" that's supposed hold my shield in place just isn't there and it moves a LOT since really only one bolt is holding it. They said no goodwill as it may have been something catching on it under the car. To our knowledge nothing has ever caught the underside of our car.

Just found this. The hole in heat shield is bigger. Like the heat shield has been pulled out over the remaining clip. Use a bit of ally sheet instead of a repair washer, the galvanic corrosion will take many car lifetimes to eat through 1mm of aluminium compared to the wafer thin heatshield. wobbliscott- no reason it has to bolt into the chassis though, a tab out of the chassis/floor with a hole through it could accomodate a bolt and wouldn’t be any more invoved to fit than a stud (or in the case of ford, a manky selftapper thing).When Nissan designed the car, if they thought that it didn't require any rear heat shields, they wouldn't have fitted any, it would have saved them millions of pounds Not to fit any. They don't think, "we'll fit heat shields for the fun of it, not to worry about the cost" I looked up myself before posting a few listings and they too came up with VW transporter, Golf fitment. Nightmare things, the amount of cars we see per year for rattles that are nothing more than heat shields that have dropped, most rot the actual heatshield and then it’s time for a big repair washer as most don’t want the cost of a new heatshield. As long as it’s at the rear of the car and not near the front, then ditching it in the main won’t cause you any problems, the biggest problem you get is the front ones that protect cv joints or steering uj’s as they then tend to fail prematurely. Rum - Yes, the thin sheet of metal sandwiched between heat shield and clip over stud is what I will try. The video I tried linking to and can't find again showed exactly what you have suggested, cheers.
