Winner of a Palme d'Or at Cannes last year and now up for an Oscar, The Class is a compelling film about teenagers at an inner-city Parisian school. Acting has always been my passion and it would give me great pleasure to succeed in it as a profession.

In fact, the drama of the film's second half is actually instigated by his lack of professionalism, when he finally loses his temper and recklessly hurls the word pétasses towards the two girls whose behaviour had been getting under his skin. For Esmeralda, the most important message of the film was "to show we are all so different but, in the end, we all stand up for Souleymane.Its authenticity means that it also sheds light on the tensions that arise, the mistakes that are made, and all the areas that need to be improved. You may not need to use the French imperfect subjunctive every day, but being able to recognise it and potentially use it means you are better equipped when tackling unseen texts or when confronted with formal French. Not surprisingly, when word of a cinematic adaptation came out, Bégaudeau wanted to be involved, contributing to the screenplay and taking on the lead role, virtually playing himself. During the next class, despite the confidential nature of the teachers' conference, the two girls tell the others that François had it in for Souleymane.

The film is loosely based on the 2006 novel of the same name by François Bégaudeau , which includes autobiographical elements and describes the life of a French language and literature teacher in an inner Paris school (a “collège”, the equivalent of a mixed comprehensive school in the UK). This is because Cantet prepared the film by selecting thousands of real students for the various parts and then going through a year-long improvisation exercise with those who made it to the final cut.
