His unit was to be part of an offensive whose main objective was Passchendaele Ridge. Attached to the Fourth Division, his battalion, he wrote, 'would be on the right flank, and my C Company, commanded by Captain Craigmile, was assigned the task of entering and holding the village of Poelcappelle which straddled a ridge in serrated line – the ruins of houses – against the misty sky.' Mendes married in October 1919, and had a son, Alfred John, the following year. His first wife, Jessie Rodriguez, died of pneumonia after only two years of marriage. Trinidadians who either worked or socialised with Alfie remember him as bright, energetic and deeply involved in the affairs of his country. Realising the power of politics to create change, he became a founding member of the United Front, a socialist-leaning party that contested Trinidad and Tobago's 1946 general elections. Although they won the lion's share of the vote and secured three of nine parliamentary seats, they never again ran for office. On October 12, the British army attempted to take the village of Poelcappelle in harsh weather conditions and sustained significant losses: almost a quarter of the 484-man battalion were killed, wounded, or missing. Those who went missing were cut off from the rest, scattered throughout the nightmarish landscape known as No Man’s Land.

In the words of his Military Medal citation: “For the whole of these two days he was continually on the move.” Mendes' life was fascinating in many ways, one of these being the number of famous people with whom he interacted, with CLR James and Aldous Huxley standing out among all. Nobody even bothers to remember this man anymore and that is why, for me, it is so fascinating to find that not only did he meet so many, but he became close friends with many of these men and women. But if there is one thing I value Alfred in particular, it is because he was more than many could expect, myself included. The first war only occupies two fleeting chapters in his book, taking the rest to speak in depth of the love and aspirations he had towards his greatest talent: writing. In the spring of 1917 the British began to utilise tunnels and artillery with more strategic acumen than ever before.
