While the beginning had some basic YA vibes with the setup, it quickly developed into an engaging NA with more sexy, more intriguing, more b*tching characters. This book was like A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire had a baby with A Ruin of Roses, but not in a good way because all the characters and plot points felt recycled from one or the other of those two stories. The veil protecting the humans from the fae has fallen, and upon its destruction, a human woman named Estrella develops fae marks. I was itching for us to meet Caelum and once we do, he is full of mystery, filthy thoughts that he shares openly and honestly some of the swooniest lines ever. Marked as a mate to one of the fae, she must flee to save herself from being hunted down by the Mist Guard, protectors of the human realm, as well as the Wild Hunt, a group of fae from the Shadow Court.The conversation they have however is so redundant and repetitive and Estrella sounds so sanctimonious throughout that I just didn’t like her from that point on. She even describes that she’s in pain but you know she just has to do this for him so he won’t hurt anyone else. I don't even mind that your p*ssy is probably still filled with his c*m from when he made you scream this morning. The secondary characters also got exponentially more interesting and solid in the second half of the book.

A veil separating fae and mates, evil queen, heroine learning powers, plots of overthrowing tyrannical kings, and did I mention fae gods? I'll leave you with one of my favourite moments, but there is not doubt that you need to pick this book up and devour it. Caldris also at one point gets triggered by seeing a dead body hanging (he's the god of the dead but go off) and decides he then must go in a frenzy and fuck his mate. I am very obsessed with this world now and am counting days until the next book comes because omg ,this is gold!In the beginning it's mentioned that a guard had taught her a few moves to defend herself and then later in the book miss ma'am turns into an experienced fighter taking two grown men down without any proper training. So the hero isn't related to Mab by blood only by the political marriage between his dead father and Mab. I probably would still read the sequel, because of the ending which I really liked but not with high expectations. The world building is excellent and brilliant and I really loved the mixture of magic/fae with gods/primordials/religious culture. However, I do not think this takes away from the very essence of the story that Woods' is telling us.

The King really was something else in this, also the whole "lost purity thing" and now won´t be able to get married is quite sexist, but hey, like I said, I feel like this is middle age times. While I wanted to like it, I didn’t and I’m afraid this is the end for me; I won’t be continuing the series.I had high hopes for this author being a diamond in the rough and this series being their chance to really grow and shine. I've spent my entire life tending to the gardens next to the boundary between our worlds, drawn to the shimmering magic like a moth to the flame. Estrella's development into a violent and defiant POV was constantly entertaining, full of raw emotions. Yes she was naive because of her upbringing, but there is a difference between naive and totally oblivious.

He cares for her to keep her away from the fae, and doesn’t like it when she goes out at night, but doesn’t ask questions on what lord Byron does with her in private? This book has been on my TBR for so long because I wasn’t quite sure if it would live up to the hype surrounding it. Those quotes sounded great out of context, but when ultimately used in the story felt a bit forced and of character.On the day she is supposed to die, the misty veil separating the fae and human realms falls and all hell breaks lose. I needed more detail on the actual mechanics of the world, but it seemed that everything just moved so fast there was no time for details. I touched my fingertips to one of the scars in the center of his spine, feeling his body still at my touch. Why it frustrated me so much is that we already kind of had all of that in book 1, and now are going through it again a second time when Estrella learns Caelum is the God of the Dead and her fated mate. We actually made a round about circle to all the places in the previous book which was unbearably boring to me.
