Usually with a new album, even a double, you listen, put it on in the car when travelling, listen again and it sinks in over a period of time. I love that guitar, its pickups, amazing ergonomics and super fast neck (I’m not a super fast player though). You probably know the specifics – each pick up has its own on/off switch, and in-phase/out-of-phase switch. A real delight for those that have a fascination for all genres of the blues and for those that appreciate Chris Rea's guitar playing. Racism and the KKK made the situation even worse, which reflected in the music, instrumentation gradually changed and the lyrics told stories of fear ("KKK Blues"), aimless wandering ("Walkin' Country Blues"), alcoholism ("Too Much Drinkin'"), but also the flight from prevailing conditions, maybe with another perspective for life and the future in the big cities ("Ticket for Chicago").

Country Blues was the natural development, the direction that the original Blues would take, once it had arrived in the American South: it was a dark time, a time of fear, people had to work hard during slavery, even harder after they had been released, wandering around unemployed, aimlessly. I think he does get a bit of a bum rap, but he's done some great stuff - Auberge was the soundtrack to one summer holiday to France, and while I don't remember much beyond the title track, I do remember liking it a lot. This can result in some very unique sounds, from round humbucker based tones (in phase) through to thinner, almost vocal sounding tones that can help a solo cut through a band mix (out of phase).He also expressed concern about the digitalization of modern generations whose musical perception lacks the attitude for making the record listening a specific enjoyable experience.

Regarding the BMG’s neck, I find it 'medium' sized, so compared to the slim Ibanez it took a little getting used to at first.All in all it was an environment, where it was only natural for the Blues to develop, and even though the instrumentation and the construction of the songs was still very different from what we now know as Blues, the basics were already there: the sadness, the strain, the burdens, the depression, the feeling of "blue" and – of course – the underlying musical structure. Nor did "electric" stop at the guitars – organs, pianos, keyboards, all was going electric, studios started to play around with the new electric sound, the possibilities seemed endless. This tasteful expansionist selection of instruments beautifully complements Chris' baritone through which he expresses pain and sorrow in a powerful fashion.

Personally, I think he excelled at the early styles of country and slide stuff, so I never really listened to the whole thing, it was an ambitious project, and I am happy to see him still around, on the fishing programme. It looks nice in the pictures, but ten times better in person; truly the most beautiful guitar I’ve ever owned. If so inspired, playing over 10 hours of this music straight through keeps the mind focused because each song is fascinating in its own right. A bit of a shame that most people just know him for 'driving home for Xmas', as he is actually a master of the instrument and just became a bit derivative with the sounds that made money.
