This special edition CD is housed in ‘hard-back book’ packaging, including a booklet with a summary of the year, a track-by-track guide, a quiz, and original singles artwork. But it’s more than just chart-toppers; there’s some great selections here such as both of ABBA’s last two singles (‘Under Attack’ and ‘The Day Before You Came’) neither of which appeared on their last studio album, The Visitors as well as early work from bands like Duran Duran (‘Hungry Like The Wolf’), Spandau Ballet (‘Instinction’), Tears For Fears (‘Mad World’) and Culture Club (‘Do You Really Want To Hurt Me’). and Tears For Fears, as well as an incredible line-up from artists who had established their chart presence in the prior 18 months and would produce some of the greatest tracks of the decade; Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, ABC, Haircut 100, Soft Cell, The Human League, and a newly solo Adam Ant. Between these are massive hits from Lionel Richie, Rufus And Chaka Khan, Tina Turner, Alison Moyet, Howard Jones and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. a 5LP boxset featuring an album per year for the period 1980-1984, each including an incredible line-up of tracks taken from either the ‘Yearbook’ or ‘Extra’ that haven’t been included on a ‘Yearbook’ vinyl edition before.Duran Duran, Haircut 100, Soft Cell, Japan, ABC, The Clash, and The Jam represent some of the greatest artists of all-time, as well as the era – plus pure Pop heaven from Bucks Fizz, Tight Fit and Dollar. Very Good: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. The full track listings are below, but in true 80s pop fashion there’s an eclectic mix of styles and genres with dance, disco, soul, pop, post-punk and even – deep breath – two entries from the year’s Eurovision Song Contest (including Nicole’s number one ‘A Little Peace’). Classic Rock from Motörhead and Judas Priest, Soulful Disco from Diana Ross and Donna Summer, and a perennial Christmas favourite from Jona Lewie are all featured.

Leading artists from the punk scene enjoyed continued and renewed success, including The Stranglers, The Clash and Pretenders, whilst Foreigner, Meat Loaf with Cher, and Steve Miller Band provided radio-favourite rock and power ballads.As a brief sidebar, I can tell you that the contest was held in Harrogate in the UK, in 1982, and 12-year-old me lived there and so I went down to the International Conference Centre and saw the acts arrive!
