Along with the keyboard and box itself, you get a small instruction manual that’s in English and Japanese. It basically walks you through the different shortcuts and settings. The Realforce opted for an right-angle triangular shaped profile with a darker gray accent plate on the top right of the keyboard. The side profile looks as though there are several layers to it, giving it a more interesting depth. In August, 2012, Topre announced that they would be ceasing production and sale of a number of full size keyboards, including the Realforce 106, 101, 103U and 103UB as they have been largely superseded by the 104U, 104UB and 108U keyboards [4]. The overall build quality of the keyboard is pretty good with dye-sublimated PBT keycaps and a unique case design. Instead of the usual box shape, the keyboard has a more sophisticated shape and structure which I enjoy.

The Realforce R2 RGB uses double-shot keycaps, so the legend on each key is actually part of the plastic making up the keycap, not a print that can rub off. Unfortunately that font isn’t quite normal, with closed sections of letters and numbers left open, looking almost like an error (e.g., the 0 key looks like (), which isn’t great when there’s an actual parenthesis right next to it on the keycap. More's the pity that the previous versions of the Realforce boards had a non-standard bottom row. Now that the R2 has a standard bottom row, my old Topre keycap sets do not fit. Nevertheless, the overall scheme looks fine to me. On APC models: Actuation Point Change (APC) technology, allowing the user to select from 3 different actuation points (1.5, 2.2, or 3.0mm)

Inside the box, there isn’t much, although I do want to point out the box itself does have a nice design to it. As someone who has been wanting to try this keyboard out for a while now, it pains me to say I have trouble recommending this keyboard to anyone. The keyboard does have a few routing channels at the bottom, so if you want to route the cable more cleanly that is an option.

Spacebar on 87U is ABS plastic, while on R2 is PBT. R2 spacebar sounds nicer but also feels nicer due to the fact that spacebar on 87U has a sharp edge (which is one of the reasons some people flip it) that can be felt if your thumb finger is not high enough when typing. Fortunately on R2 the edge feels smoother, maybe due to the different plastic material. Please note that if the elevating feet are used on 87U, this issue is much less noticeable. The tactile bump is bit more pronounced than a Cherry MX Brown which I enjoyed, but the bottom-out and sound it produces is not for me. The Stabilizers The Epomaker NiZ Plum Atom 68, still comes with an electro-capacitive switch design, similar to Topre, but at a much more affordable price point. The Realforce R2 RGB also lights up all of the secondary functions on keys. However, only the main key sections (letters, numbers, punctuation) get the best lighting, because the secondary functions are positioned beside the primary functions instead of below. The F-key row see the brightness taper off lower on the keycap, where the secondary functions are, making them harder to see and kind of shoddy looking.

The build quality of the Topre Realforce TKL is quite excellent. The case is made entirely of a plastic construction with a stainless steel plate which makes the keyboard extra rigid. Topre REALFORCE keyboards are high-end keyboards built for maximum programming and gaming performance. Designed for comfort and efficiency, REALFORCE keyboards feature Topre’s best-in-class capacitive key switches which allow for durability and reduced user fatigue. The build quality aside, I found the keyboard to be underwhelming, especially considering the steep price point. Although subtle, Topre use two font sizes for their printed legends. The smaller size was used on some of their older keyboards and keyboards that have two language character sets (e.g. English + Hiragana or English + Hangul). The easiest way to tell is to observe the distance between the top of the keycap and the top of the printed legend. The larger font will be much closer to the top edge of the keycap than the small font.

Topre introduced their Realforce line of keyboards in Japan with the Realforce 106 (Model LA0100), released in June, 2001 for a price of 16,800 yen. At the time, they were producing 500 of these keyboards per month [2]. The first tenkeyless board introduced was the Realforce 89 (Model ND0100). These early keyboards both had PS/2 connectors and were in Japanese JIS layout.Perhaps I built up the idea of Topre too much inside my head before purchasing, but the expectations of an amazing product did not get met by the real deal.

Some additional personal preferences for possible future models from Realforce include an option for a detachable cable, complete programmability via QMK or something similar, a 60% form factor version, and keycap sets for the R2 and other RF models. REALFORCE keyboards includeFujitsu Computer Products of America’s industry leading technical support, a 2 year advanced exchange warranty and U.S. certifications. This makes each keystroke feel rattily and bit unstable. I have difficulty understanding why Topre skipped out on installing stabilizers on these keys, as they impact the typing experience tremendously. If I planned on using the keyboard over the long-term, I would attempt to memorize the shortcuts because it could make using the keyboard more efficient.
