Like Christmas cake in a bottle, it is made usingrumdistilled from freshly pressed sugar cane juice on the Island of Madeira.

It’s not a very woody or oaky spirit. Most of the flavour is coming from the fruity notes which build on the mid palate – raisin and dark plums come through. Again it’s fruitier than the nose suggested for me. In recent years, Mauritian rums have gained international acclaim, earning awards and recognition at prestigious spirits competitions. This global recognition is a testament to the quality and craftsmanship of Mauritian rum, solidifying the island’s reputation as a world-class rum producer. I’ve reviewed a few Mauritian rums in the past more I think from Oxenham Distillery than Grays. I’m sure WordPress will work its magic and add a few relevant links to the bottom of this post. The Matugga distillery was established in 2018 by husband and wife team Jacine and Paul Rutasikwa, who had been selling their range of rums since 2015.

Sustainability is a growing focus in the Mauritian rum industry, reflecting the island’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty and resources. Many distilleries are adopting eco-friendly practices, from sustainable sugarcane farming to energy-efficient production methods. It’s an interesting nose and a quite complex one. It’s rich, warm and inviting but not overly sweet. It will certainly appeal to those who enjoy un-sweetened rum but what something with some level of sweetness, without being cloying or sugary. Natural sweetness maybe? Obviously its a column distilled spirit so it won’t have some of the rougher edges of a Pot Still distillate but even still it’s certainly an easy sipper.

Mauritius Dodo Rum is a unique and captivating blend of history, culture, and craftsmanship from the island of Mauritius. This rum not only showcases the island’s rich heritage but also pays homage to one of its most iconic yet extinct inhabitants: the dodo. Orkney distillery J. Gow Rum recently added a three-year-old cask aged pot still rum to its core range. Presentation wise we get the usual S.B.S presentation with the rounded stubby bottle and the “cut out” presentation box. The presentation is modern and focuses on facts around the contents of the bottle. The rum is non-chill filtered and no colouring or additives have been used in its production. Mauritian rum is crafted using both molasses and fresh sugarcane juice, resulting in a variety of styles and flavours. The island’s distilleries skillfully harness the natural sweetness of the sugarcane, creating rums that are rich, flavourful, and distinctly Mauritian. My gorgeous Comfort Room was one of 95 spilling out into the tropical gardens and there are eight apartments too. The artisan decor encapsulates the “Feel Mauritius, Feel Mauritian” concept with traditional rattan furniture, light-coloured wood, a handwoven bag and sun hat hanging on coat pegs.Mauritius is home to several renowned distilleries, each contributing to the island’s rum legacy in their own unique way. Distillerie de Chamarel, located in the lush hills of southwestern Mauritius, is celebrated for its premium rhum agricole. The distillery takes pride in its field-to-bottle approach, overseeing every step of the production process to ensure the highest quality. The Scottish rum recipe is based on the Sea Shanty ‘wellermen’ song which talks about ‘sugar and tea and rum’.

Revenge’ has been distilled in Orkney and then aged in ex-bourbon and virgin oak casks for three years. This unaged rum is pot distilled from sugar cane molasses in Scotland by Dumfries-based Ninefold Distillery. Fresh sugarcane juice rums, also known as “rhum agricole,” are a point of pride for Mauritius. These rums are made directly from freshly pressed sugarcane juice, capturing the essence of the sugarcane in its purest form. Rhum agricole from Mauritius is celebrated for its bright, grassy notes and vibrant, fruity character. For those unfamiliar with Moscatel wine, it is produced from grapes of the same name and is a Sherry Wine. As a result its sweet and very raisin heavy. I’m not a wine expert so I’d suggest doing some further research if you want to know more. For the purpose of a rum review I think we know enough now. Mauritius Dodo Silver RumThis version is just as impressive in its presentation, with the dodo-shaped bottle reflecting the silver hue of the rum. The Silver Rum offers a different but equally enchanting flavour profile, weaving together grassy, herbal notes with the sweetness of apple, cinnamon, and brown sugar. It’s a rum that captures the essence of Mauritius, balancing traditional rum-making methods with a modern flair.Mauritius, an idyllic island nestled in the Indian Ocean, has a rich history intertwined with the production of rum. This lush, tropical paradise has cultivated a rum industry that is deeply rooted in tradition while embracing innovation and sustainability, creating rums that are as diverse and captivating as the island itself. As the title suggests UK retailer The Whisky Exchange have teamed up with Denmark’s 1423 World Class Spirits. For this release we have a Single Barrel rum from Grays Distillery, Mauritius. As the mid palate move into the finish I notice a slightly herbal note – slight medicinal hit of Calpol. Nothing overbearing or unpleasant though.
