Always follow the instructions for how to apply your particular moss killer. The instructions will say either “dry” application or “wet” application or give you a choice of these methods. Dry Granules All you need to get started is some TRADE FARM NI LTD Iron sulphate, a watering can or a sprayer, and some water. Gardeners use iron sulphate for treating lawns and feeding ericaceous plants. Iron sulphate, also known as ferrous sulphate, is used as a fertiliser for lawns. Grass really loves an iron tonic. After applying iron to your lawn it will turn faded looking grass into a lush dark green lawn in no time. It also helps harden the turf and prevent lawn disease. Chemically, iron sulphate is a salt with various applications – industrially, horticulturally, and even medically.

You can use iron sulphate four times a year on your lawn. That is, once every season. Make sure you use it in moderation for the best results. That said, the most important thing is that you always need to apply it a few days before the grass seed. That’s because it will prevent new seedlings from being able to germinate well. But go overboard with iron sulphate, and you risk burning the grass while increasing soil acidity. Lawns simply don’t like too much iron sulphate. This is a slowly Iron sulphate, even at low doses, has the potential to over-acidify the soil, and I saw one case where a gardener had miscalculated the dose and turned his grass yellow – I confirmed this by conducting a pH and nutrient test for him. While it was too late for him to do anything, the best approach would be to water the lawn heavily for a few hours to flush out the chemical. What to Watch Out For When Applying Iron The final step is to water the lawn thoroughly. Your lawn is now in fight mode as its rhizomes send out new shoots. Consider top-dressing the lawn A very common question is about the use of iron sulphate with kids and pets on the grass. It is highly recommended that both children and pets are kept off treated areas for 3-4 days after application of iron sulphate. Iron sulphate can be toxic if ingested in large amounts. It therefore can be dangerous to pets who would eat grass. Not so dangerous to children then unless they also eat the grass. Iron sulphate is also classed as an irritant so there is a small chance it might irritate pet paws or kids if they are on the grass. In our opinion both of these warnings are just a little bit on the safe side. There is more likely to be a greater risk of kids and pets getting onto the treated areas and then carrying sulphate onto paving or other hard surfaces where the sulphate will cause a rust coloured stain that is difficult to remove. Always read the instructions, but most iron-based garden products aren’t toxic or harmful to animals. Essentially, you’re applying natural minerals to your lawn, so it’s not like you’re adding harsh chemicals. Always remember to read the instructions to make sure you are using the supplement properly. Remember that you want to avoid overdoing your lawn with iron. Apply Iron Only As Needed

What’s more, stronger grass is more resistant to autumn lawn diseases like red thread, snow mould and brown patches. It can be a good idea to spray some iron sulphate on your lawn before autumn comes your way. Applying iron sulphate with a sprayer is a different proposition. You will need to use a little bit of maths to calculate using with this method.Be careful about getting it on any patios or inside as it stains hard surfaces very easily. If this happens, wash and scrub surface immediately. Remember though, iron sulphate won’t kill off weeds because it’s not a herbicide. So, now let’s look at the different forms in a bit more detail. What are the different forms in which it can be applied to your lawn? I’ll also recommend how you can use all three products together to achieve ultimate moss control. A bowl of soluble powder usually applied at 4g per m2 When and how often to apply iron sulphate to your lawn There are a few important do’s and don’ts to bear in mind when applying this product. Here a the main ones. If you are going to apply at the highest rate and it is the first time you are going to try this treatment I would suggest two applications of 2 to 3g/m²each and space the two applications by a few days. This assists penetration deeper into the moss whilst being gentler on the grass.
