The redemptive journey of a young woman unsure of her engagement, who revisits in memory the events of one scorching childhood summer when her beautiful yet troubled mother spirits her away from her home to an Indian village untouched by time, where she discovers in the jungle behind her ancestral house a spellbinding garden that harbours a terrifying secret. A light, lively palette is characteristic of the work of Mary Cassatt, an American painter who introduced art lovers and collectors on the other side of the Atlantic to Impressionism. So the children of friends are now friends themselves, playing the same games in the same park as their parents did. However, there is no one lead protagonist, which makes it difficult to fully understand any one character.

Rather than ignore this mysterious situation, she gets in and faces the unknown and uncovers something scarey and shameful, yet fulfilling to Rakhee in some way. We all loved the enchanting communal garden that appears to be the perfect oasis and a parent’s dream place to let their kids play and always have friends around, however we soon learn of the danger lurking in the garden. There, she discovers in the jungle behind her ancestral house a spellbinding garden that harbors a terrifying secret. Our traditional method preserves the natural humectant glycerin in the soap which attracts and retains moisture on the skin for a gentle cleansing that awakens your senses and brings nourishment to your cleansing routine. The plot itself was how June, an abandoned teenage mother, unknowingly weaves herself into the lives of these individuals and allows for healing and closure or the ability to continue living.We then go back in time to fill in the events that brought us here, mainly from Pip (sister to Grace who was found unconscious), Adele (mother of friends of Pip and Grace’s who also like in the Garden), and Clare (mother to Pip and Grace). Appropriately the most odious character here, Gordon the father-in-law of Adele, is the most elderly. She portrayed scenes of everyday life, particularly images of mothers and children, and was skilled at drawing and printmaking. Everyone feels intimately connected (sometimes far too much so), and though each family has their own dwelling the bulk of what happens centers around this garden. Kamala Nair has crafted an evocative, passionate, tragic novel about love, loss and the terrible cost of family secrets.

This book did a fantastic job of solidifying that vision for me while also bringing to light all the things that can go wrong when you are too close to your neighbors. Kamala Nair weaves an intricate tale of family bonds, buried secrets, and the pain that comes when we must leave the innocence of childhood behind. Very easy to read, standard writing, good characters, and a nice book to take a break from using too much of your brainpower to read.

Clare and her daughters, Pip and Grace, move into the community after their husband and father has a breakdown. Also what’s up with what the chapter where Avery is unexplainably and suddenly able to read a book while Ri and his mom play the guitars together… isn’t he blind? If you haven't read a Lisa Jewell book before, I would start with Watching You as I think that's her best work.

Melanie Wallace regularly changes her points of view and every character has a distinct voice and an interesting story to tell.Surrounded by the personal histories and secrets of others, June finds the way forward for herself and her son amid revelations of the others' pasts, including loves—and crimes—from years ago. I didn't particularly warm to either Clare or Adele, they were each too one-dimensional and cliched. While this wasn’t a heart pounding thriller, it did manage to keep my attention nicely once everything was set up. Our main character gets caught acting out and gets sent to her grandparents out in the middle of nowhere.
