Nokia execs’ used to joke that if you dropped one of their phones, it’s the floor that’ll come off worse. The Nokia 8.3 5G follows this strategy when it comes to design. Recent leaks confirm that Nokia 8.3 5G is headed to Russia, US, European markets and China too, it seems. HMD CPO Juho Sarvikas recently teased fans with a Nokia 8.3 5G video captured with another Nokia 8.3 5G. This video also revealed the variants TA-1243 and TA-1251. We'd avoid using the digital zoom, too. Even at 2x, interpolation is clear and image quality suffers. Night time photography tells a similar story. Though it is possible to take usable snaps in low light, if you have steady hands, motion blur creeps in with even the slightest movement. Noise is also prone to creeping in and generally you won’t get the same quality shot as you would using a Pixel 5.

The Nokia 8.3 5G’s screen is generally good, outside of one key omission – it doesn’t have a high refresh rate screen. The difference between identical RAW and JPEG images at various ISO settings viewed side by side is interesting. Noise reduction at higher ISO settings is erratic for JPEG images taken in low contrast light. If you're serious about a picture, it is well worth opting for RAW format (the phone will record JPEG simultaneously anyway). Also, there are many controls and effects that could be applied better. For example, HDR is automatic with no manual override. Customisation of modes like time-lapse is limited. The exact dimensions are 171.90 x 78.56 x 8.99mm, with the handset weighing in at 227 grams. It's not a light device, but the heft feels about right given its size.

However, the heft makes it feel reassuringly solid, and having survived an accidental encounter with the kitchen flaw I can confirm it is very well built. As an added bonus, unlike many phones at this price it also has a formal IP 52 water resistance rating. This isn’t quite as good as an IP 68 rating, but it does add some protection from sprays of water. With regular use I found the Nokia 8.3 5G zips through everyday tasks. Multi-tab web browsing is smooth and the phone runs game streaming services, like GeForce Now with zero issues. Local games like CoD Mobile and PUBG also run fine, though I tended to dial down their graphics settings to remain the occasional delay in loading times. The maximum resolution is for the standard 1.0x lens. The ultra-wide lens is nearer 12 megapixels (4608x2596 pixels) while the macro lens is a paltry 2 megapixels (1600x1200 pixels). That 64 megapixels is activated manually in the Pro photo mode only and creates huge images at 30.7x23.0in (9216x6912 pixels).

Likewise, the screen is bright enough for sunny days, with a measured maximum luminance of 591cd/m² with the automatic brightness setting engaged and a torch aimed at the phone’s ambient light sensor at the top of the screen. That’s easy enough to find, but it’s not entirely clear that you’re only shooting in 16MP if you don’t select Pro mode. The Nokia 8.3 5G is a decent phone in its own right. Its biggest draw is its eye-catching design, and we found ourselves regularly getting lost in the depths of its beautiful aurora-like rear. While things are far more reserved around the front, there’s no escaping the benefit of its larger-than-average display, particularly if you spend a lot of time browsing content or watching Netflix series on loop. Overall, each mode is easy to navigate and glitch free. Panoramas look good although image processing isn't always on the money, while slow motion videos can be customised post capture by selecting the part of the timeline that you wish to be in slow motion.
