Here we take a look at two of those projects in more detail. These studies were written by collaborators on the projects. HomeGrownHouse - Grown in Britain This is a collaborative project between Forest Research and Sylva Foundation, an environmental and forestry charity. It is funded by the Defra Future Proofing Plant Health Programme. The Tree Growth Project seeks to collect regular growth data to improve our understanding of the response of trees to changes in woodland management and climate change across the country. Volunteers take regular measurements using growth bands and upload the data via Forest Lab. A grant is available to help fund the production of a woodland plan (Countryside Stewardship option PA3), where the full Forestry Commission template is used.

Wildfire Project - The objective of this project is to collect valuable information and data to help understand wildfire risk for researchers. This information will be used to assess and decrease wildfire risk for myForest users, and woodland owners across the country.

You can find the tool in the myForest Platform, a focused GIS software allowing woodland owners and managers to map, plan, and manage their woodlands. myForest • home (sylva.org.uk) Screenshot of the myForest Woodland Assessor Forest Lab is a project within myForest which enables landowners and scientists to exchange information about woodlands. The main outputs of the project will be the building and testing of a new IT platform to support stakeholders with mapping tools, and links to other decision support tools. We will also be developing a woodland creation plan.

Use the small woodland plan template (macro enabled) ( ODT, 160 KB) template for woodland of an area less than 10 hectares - this is to apply for a felling licence, but is not eligible for funding to prepare a woodland management plan through Countryside Stewardship. Throughout this project, the team has engaged with the Forestry Commission and other community forest organisations to ensure that the project outcomes are as practical and relevant as possible to bring the greatest amount of unmanaged woodland into management in the North East and Wider Yorkshire Area. When creating either a forest creation or management plan it is vital to outline the Forest Management Unit (FMU). The FMU is the area subject to a forest management plan or proposal. This area is selected by the owner and/or manager and will be determined by the nature of the forest, the proposed operations and both creation and management objectives. Extensive FMUs have the advantage of allowing a strategic approach to be taken in achieving UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) Requirements, both in terms of the area covered and the timescale. Following the devastating impacts of Storm Arwen, the second webinar 'An Introduction to Management Planning' was rearranged to allow us to answer queries regarding the impacts of Storm Arwen on woodland management along with guests from the Forestry Commission and Euro Forest.
