A rare brown Spode decanter from Chivas Brothers Ltd, This Royal Salute flagon of 21 years old blended whisky has been specially created to celebrate the Coronation of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. A brown decanter was introduced in the 1950s but was discontinued in 1991. Other colours, all containing the same 21-year-old blend, have included blue (first introduced in 1960), and burgundy, which first arrived in 1985. It's a real treat (should I say "royal treat"?) and, to round things up, it isn't super-pricey (not cheap, though.) As mentioned before, I've also had the chance to drink and review the way more expensive elder brother (38 y.o.) but this is the one I'd root for.

Royal Salute is unique in that the youngest ‘entry-level’ expression in its range is 21 years old. Since its launch Royal Salute has always been bottled in coloured ceramic decanters, the first of which was green, and made by Royal Doulton. It initially featured the Royal Coat of Arms, which was later replaced by the Chivas Brothers crest depicting Robert the Bruce.

What a beautiful container. The blue porcelain flagon stands out on my whisky shelf. The Chivas Royal Salute 21 yo whisky is produced by Chivas Brothers. Chivas Brothers trace its roots to the opening of a grocery store in Aberdeen in 1801. The grocery store took the name Chivas Brothers from the 17th century House of Schivas, a large house in the town of the Schivas in Aberdeenshire. Royal Salute is 21 year old blended Scotch whisky first created in 1953 to pay tribute to the British monarchy, with the first bottles launched at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (which took place at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953 when Elizabeth II was in her mid twenties). Fittingly, the whisky takes its name from the “21 gun salute” which is a customary British gun salute. Taste: The initial taste of sherry, walnuts and oak is strong, but the palate dries and orange peel, cinnamon, honey and cooked apples eventually emerge and cut through a thin veil of wood smoke and char, as an oily film coats the tongue. At her coronation, the crown of Queen Elizabeth II was set in rubies, sapphires and emeralds. These precious stones remain the inspiration for the colours of Royal Salute's handcrafted flagons, therefore bottle colour may vary. Let's get into the review itself. What have we here? A clean, golden to amber pour with a greenish cast to it. Aroma starts with a very clear and distinctive hint of pineapple that I loved and led me to pair this with the very fresh raw fruit a few day later to great heights of joy. There's also a trace of umeboshi plum and citrus rind. Add a little water and the charred oak will be displayed: caramel, charcoal, undergrowth, etc. I must say this one goes well with a drop of some subtly sparkling water, but that's just an aside.

Strathisla distillery [ edit ] Strathisla distillery Finish: The nut oils dry up as the oak becomes grippy, and the taste of tea leaves and spices fade gently together with dwindling citrus peel marmalade and dates in what is a slow, long-lived and classy finale. Mouth starts pungent and oily; midpalate develops salty and bitterish notes. Finish is very long, with soft metallic flavors coming hand in hand with a sweet and oily feeling. Boy, do I like it. The store sold luxury food items such as coffee, exotic spices, French brandies, and Caribbean rums to wealthy customers. As the business grew, Chivas Brothers gained a reputation for supplying smooth malt whiskies of the highest quality.
