We changed the subtype from WRGB to WOLED as it's more accurate and more consistent with other TVs.Upscaled content on this 55-inch screen looks great. Standard definition is unsurprisingly soft in detail, definition and sharpness terms, watching Garden Rescue on the BBC and the softness was apparent in the texture of the wood fencing and close-ups of people’s faces. But edge definition is fairly solid, with relatively less fuzziness surrounding the outlines of people and objects and the colour performance produced strong blues, verdant greens and rich-looking reds of the flowers in the garden. For a 480p image, there’s nothing too egregious to note aside from noise on people’s faces. Maybe die-hard audiophiles wouldn’t be ecstatic, but to my ear, this was some of the best sound I’ve ever heard from an OLED—or a television of any type. Advanced screen-speaker technology with Cognitive Processor XR turns any sound source into an immersive sound experience. Hear sound more clearly and accurately, whatever you're watching. Enjoy entertainment in a whole new way with sound and picture in perfect harmony. All of that said, even the A90J could and should be improved by a separate sound system, so of course the same is true – only more so – of the A80J. Budget for at least a Sonos Arc, if you can. Verdict That isn’t to say that we’re averse to recommending a premium product when it justifies its high price, and that’s why we were delighted to bestow the full five stars upon Sony’s 2021 flagship OLED when we reviewed it. Simply put, it was the best TV of that year.

Its premium look metal bezel is extremely narrow so your eyes naturally focus on the picture, not what's around it Comparing the two (even though they’re different sizes) would indicate that the Sony A80J puts more of an emphasis on HDR highlights (smaller, brighter objects) while the C1 is a smidgen brighter when dealing with bigger bright objects. However, brightness is only just one element to consider where picture performance is concerned. However, as with all of Sony’s 2021 OLEDs (even the flagship models), only two of the HDMI inputs support 4K/120Hz and ALLM (auto low latency mode). Since one of these inputs also supports eARC, that means anyone with both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles could find themselves unable to enjoy the benefits of both simultaneously. There’s also no support for VRR (variable refresh rate), but this feature is expected to be added via an imminent firmware update. See colors that are natural and beautiful to the human eye. Cognitive Processor XR enables a unique display to access a wider palette and reproduce each color with the subtle differences seen in the real world. Having a great screen means nothing unless you have top quality content that does it justice and here, thanks to the inclusion of BRAVIA CORE, Sony once again has you covered. Now, if Sony played the Samsung game, of not putting Dolby Vision in their sets, I wouldn't buy it. The A80J doesn’t have the brighter OLED Evo panel that LG’s more recent C2 and G2 models have, but as this is a 2021 model, so a more apt comparison would be the non-Evo LG C1 (which I reviewed the 65-inch version). We retested the TV with the PS5's variable refresh rate (VRR) feature and updated the PS5 Compatibilitysection of the review, as VRR is working properly.Was it "Standard", "Cinema", "Dolby Audio" or some other sound mode and was it used with defaults or were the settings customised? Maximising the surround effect seems to work well and I also turned off Dolby compression. Even deep into 2022, it's a great buy, particularly in the UK and Australia where it's one of the very cheapest 55-inch OLED TVs you can buy. You should of course consider spending a little more on a newer, 2022 TV. The Sony A80K and LG C2 are both better overall, particularly in terms of brightness and, in the case of the LG, even better specified for gaming. But there's no denying that the A80J is still an excellent TV that will reward buyers for years to come.
