In summer, it feeds on plants such as grass, ferns, and leaves; in winter, it eats twigs, the bark from trees, and plants and, similar to the Arctic hare, has been known to occasionally eat dead animals. [3] It can sometimes be seen feeding in small groups. This animal is mainly active at night and does not hibernate. The snowshoe hare may have up to four litters in a year, which average three to eight young. Males compete for females, and females may breed with several males. Snowshoe hares reach maturity after one year. Some live up to five years in the wild, but most don’t even live for one year. A snowshoe hairs trail, which takes the hares between feeding and resting places, are well-traveled. These trails are also used by other species, such as squirrels, porcupines, and skunks. In Utah, snowshoe hares used Gambel oak ( Quercus gambelli) in the northern portion of the Gambel oak range. I enjoyed the tension the author built around the birth of Lena’s daughter but I don’t want to give any spoilers. Overall, The Snow Hare is the most beautiful story of resilience, love, and triumphing over despair. It has a tone and style that suits the snow on the cover and in title. I don’t know how to put my finger on just what it is, but it connected me to the story even more. On top of that, I absolutely loved Lena and her complexity. Desp Penczykowski, R. M., Connolly, B. Shortly after I finished "The Snow Hare," I sought more information about the history of Poland toward the end of the 1930’s and into the 1940’s. At "My Learning, Lola’s Journey: Deported to Siberia," I read that “In September 1939, Germany and Russia invaded Poland and divided it between them. Stalin wanted to destroy eastern Poland and absorb it into the Soviet Union, so he confiscated land, property, and businesses, and deported over 1.5 million Polish people to slave labour camps in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and the Arctic Circle. Many died because of appalling conditions during the journeys and at the camps.”

When threatened, rabbits normally freeze and rely on disguise. The snowshoe hare uses their big feet to run at the first sign of danger. This book transports you to another countries and regimes, you’re completely submerged in Lena’s life and while I’ve read that some have not connected with Lena’s character I have completely. She’s strong and forthright woman who dreams of more than society allows of her. She is going to be a dr, one of the first females to begin training in Poland, but life has other plans for her. Entering a loveless marriage following an accident she and her family are transported to Siberia when the Soviets invade Poland.
