He would find a scene from the interior art that appeared to make for a good cover, or use a hook on the cover that outlined the plot of the issue. Bolland is noted by some for his use of bondage imagery, although in a humorous self-referential comment, he quotes this "fact" (cited as from Wikipedia), and states that he is unsure of the sentiment's accuracy. I especially liked Bruno Premiani on Doom Patrol and anything by the artist who I (and I think a lot of other professionals) consider the great master - Alex Toth. In 2006 a comprehensively sizeable retrospective of Bolland's work was published by Image/Desperado under the title The Art of Brian Bolland, featuring contextualising references and copious text – 33,500 words [109] – written by the artist with Joe Pruett alongside hundreds of pieces of artwork and rare photographs. On the downside the page-count meant that, for the first time, my pencils would be inked by an inker.

The biggest thrill for me was seeing the emerging talent of Mick McMahon whose work spurred me on, along with John Wagner's terrific satirical stories, to do the best I could. Barr on Camelot 3000, which was DC Comics' first 12-issue comicbook maxiseries created for the direct market. With Brian’s art being so attractive and highly prized, it’s understandable that many collectors had them mounted in frames, which proved to be the bane of my life as framed art couldn’t be scanned in the sort of clarity we needed. Through Landau, Bolland saw his strip published across Europe in publications including Linus, Cimoc and (in Sweden) Pox. The front endpaper is quite blurry, while the back endpaper is exceptionally clear for its enlargement.For Forbidden Planet and Titan he created 3 giant posters, a 1979 comic catalog cover, 5 covers and 9 interior illustrations for Titan’s book reprint series; there were also 42 covers for Eagle Comics’ various U. He also contributed a smaller, strip entitled "The Mixed-Up Kid" to the Central School of Art's Galloping Maggot, the college newspaper. Also included is a gallery of covers ranging from 2000 AD to the Judge Dredd reprints published by Eagle Comics which brought Brian to the attention of American readers and show off Bolland’s inventiveness and sardonic humour.

Bolland is one of the definitive 2000 AD artists, his work on Judge Dredd helped catapult the series to international attention, not least thanks to his co-creation of the arch alien superfiend Judge Death. Approached by Batman-editor Mark Chiarello, Bolland was asked whether he would like to draw Batman covers for a new title, Batman: Gotham Knights. The Judge Dredd art of Brian Bolland is regarded as some of the greatest comic art of the Eighties, and helped catapult both the series and Brian Bolland himself to international acclaim, leading him to work on such titles as Camelot 3000 and Batman: The Killing Joke . Bolland's covers over the next 30-plus issues laid the visual groundwork for the character, and saw Bolland illustrate up to and including the centennial issue No.

Landau spent time paginating the book at Bolland's flat, and discovered that "[s]ome stories started or ended on the wrong page thereby leaving blank pages," as it was set to be "in effect, the first book exclusively of my work" the artist "gladly offered to add three full page pictures for the Cursed Earth volume and a new back cover for the first Judge Dredd volume. When we produce inked artwork, the intention is to have the artwork reproduce in sharp black and white. It was the beginning of the '80s boom when people like Frank Miller were being treated like stars and refashioning the look of the books they were in. This book will include pages from the Judge Dredd epics; The Cursed Earth, The Day the Law Died, The Judge Child Quest, and Bolland's masterpiece Judge Death Lives. It will feature high-resolution scans of original art, showing Bolland’s delicate inking brushwork in unprecedented detail, as well as the titles and word balloons placed over it at the time by IPC’s art team.
