The entire point of micro hi-fi systems is to save space, and the Denon D-M41 does just that. Its footprint is a little smaller than a piece of A4 paper, so it shouldn’t have a problem fitting into your bedroom, kitchen or home office. Hi-fi equipment is hardly ever sexy, especially at the affordable end, but Denon has made the most of what it’s got. The overall aesthetic hasn’t changed hugely over the years – it’s still a rectangular metal box with grilles on the top and sides for ventilation. The front has a brushed aluminium fascia though, and the buttons and volume knob are lightly textured.

The Denon DM41 DAB comes with an impressive sounding tuner radio that's comprehensively equipped. Featuring DAB+, DAB and FM (RDS), the tuner has all your radio needs covered and, as ever, puts sound quality first. If the D-M41DAB – which we'd again recommend pairing with the company’s designated speakers – doesn’t quite put its predecessor to shame, it certainly puts it in the shade. Tonal balance is spot on. You can adjust the EQ settings, but not once did I feel that was necessary. Denon has managed a sound that’s smooth without ever risking sounding too warm or rich, perhaps because the low end is never less than taut. The midrange is direct, without ever overpowering the rest of the frequency range. The treble is crisp and light, like sprinkles on a sundae. Most HiFi manufactures have a "house sound" and Denon's tends to be described as bright which some people love whereas others prefer a warmer sound for music. I've a much older version of the unit thats relegated to the Mrs' studio and is just going through a budget pair of wharfedale speakers but it sounds good for the price and age... clearly my Arcam/Kef combination in the lounge is much better but then a single speaker of that setup is several times the cost of the full denon setup.
