An easy way to avoid cheaply produced Gins is by looking at the label. If it says something like Distilled Gin, Dry Gin, or London Dry Gin, it cannot be a Compound Gin. Consequently, these often were of inferior quality, and one had to mask their harsh bite and unpleasant flavors.

Bathtub Gin– owing to the fact that legally gin is simply “juniper flavored spirit,” one can make a gin by infusing/macerating, or alternatively “cold compounding” juniper berries and other botanicals in a spirit.The flavor profile is again rather traditional, with classic botanicals like juniper, cardamom, coriander, fresh orange peel, and cloves. Modern Day Importance Noticeably, Hayman’s Old Tom is distinctly sweeter, seeing as they add sugar. Ransom does not. Ransom is aged in wine barrels (hence the hue). Hayman’s is not. Bajes Too different for me I love a crisp G & T, but not keen on the liquorice and cinnamon flavours of this gin. Much prefer the grapefruit gin. The difference between Bathtub Gin and Gin is that for making Bathtub Gin, you add the botanicals to an already distilled spirit. For traditional gin, the infusion of botanicals happens during distillation. Also part of the The Ableforth series is a Cask aged version of Bathtub Gin (the one we are tasting is from batch one, each batch will vary slightly). The Cask Aged Bathtub Gin is to date the best example of what barrel ageing can do to a gin. The original gin already has orangey citrus notes and a gentle but pronounced juniper, which is further accentuated by more caramelised citrus, soft spice and added viscosity. The resulting liquid is slightly sweet with a soft and buttery feel. Juniper carries all the way while the finish lingers nicely with the spice from the coriander and cloves appearing alongside a warm citrus. The Cask Aged Bathtub Gin is in our eyes one of the best examples of the potential of the ageing process.TASTING NOTES – Boatyard Old Tom gin has notes of candied lemon peel, vanilla and cinnamon spice, with a silky, orange finish. It is slightly sweeter than a London Dry style. A compound gin is the more modern and safe version of bathtub gin that also involves infusing berry and fruit essences in neutral grain spirits. The idea that the drink was poured right in the bathtub was mere speculation, as many would say distillation requires a closed apparatus. Hence, it was highly unlikely that they put the mixture in the bathtubs. Is Bathtub Gin Still Made Today? However, the technique is not used that frequently anymore as it’s actually a lot easier and faster to create consistent gin in high volumes by doing colossal distillation runs, rather than macerating botanicals and filtering it or by simply adding artificial flavourings to Vodka. It is worth stressing that it has always been possible to create a good gin using cold compounding and that with care and attention the resulting spirit created can be a balanced, well rounded gin. Bathtub Gin goes a long way in demonstrating this. Bathtub Gin is made using a technique called cold compounding. Technically speaking, compound gin involves flavourings (such as botanicals) simply being added to neutral grain spirit and then filtered out before bottling. Although there are many other technicalities surrounding how it is done, ABV for example, in layman’s terms – compound gins just infuse whereas distilled gins infuse and then distil.
