She converses with her father, and they discuss how they never were able to go on that trip due to his death.

As they are about to exit the memory through a portal, Emily sees her father in another one, and decides to follow him. The book concerns the adventures of Emily Hayes, who must try to rescue her kidnapped mother with the assistance of her younger brother Navin, a mysterious amulet, and helper robots such as Miskit. The monster grabs the two children and swallows Navin, but with the amulet's assistance Emily is able to break free, and Karen is able to push Navin out of a hole in creature's side. She quickly masters it, but only seconds later they are attacked by wyverns, losing Cogsley and Miskit in the process.

Silas says to Emily the amulet has great power and can allow her to rule the land of Alledia, and even has the power to turn back time, making Emily think of when her dad was alive and the possibility that she can use the Amulet to bring her dad back. Emily is usually very resistant to the Voice's attempts to control her, except in the seventh book; when the Voice finds out about her longing for her dead father, he causes her to give in to her desire for revenge against the man that accidentally caused the death of David Hayes, and she turns into a firebird (that is, an enormous phoenix) and becomes an unwilling servant of the Voice. As with most stonekeepers, however, Emily does not always have complete jurisdiction over her actions, due to the stone's Voice having a will of its own and occasionally overpowering Emily, such as during the battle against Luger at Demon's Head Mountain. She then goes into the Void to rescue Trellis, and later on he repays the debt by getting her out from Max's memories.
