Story 11: I really liked this one. Hard to wrap my head around, definitely gets you thinking about what you just read, but I loved it. So many parodies of real life shows, and they're all scarily accurate at that. The way it all came together at the end was pretty cool too. ☆☆☆☆☆ Throw the Dog a Bone: In issue 29, the main character is contemplating his family's cycle of bad choices, literally travelling down his family tree. At the end, he is seen joining his long gone family members for a drink. And Caleb is the bartender. It's incredibly touching, given how bleak this comic's setting is. Even though this had some super creepy imagery in the interlude, I just didn’t connect with this one as much as I did the first two. Not sure why, it just felt a bit off. A dad and friend mend the loss of their son/friend in a very odd way. In some cases, the moral of the story is a bit too on-the-nose, but even when it’s expected it’s told very effectively. Morazzo and O’Halloran’s art is a big part of that. Morazzo draws seemingly simplistic, organic scenes that allow the truly horrific and truly funny scenes to break through the lull he’s established. O’Halloran’s colors set the mood, swinging from mundane to surreal in a heartbeat. The fourth story is even more so: a guy who’s thinking of skipping out on his pregnant wife meets his dead friend’s father who did something similar years ago and… they have a drink. It’s so utterly forgettable - honestly, I’ve had to remind myself twice now how that one ended. What a steep drop in quality from the first issue to the fourth! The first story that wavers in quality for me. It’s not bad or anything, but it didn’t do all that much for me in the end. Just about some one-hit wonder in some fantasy post-apocalypse where he is the key to saving the world. I did like some of the crazy imagery we got though. Driven to Suicide: Issue 5 follows a man who was coaxed into jumping off the top floor of his office building by the ice cream man and reflects on his life and mistakes on the way down.

The Ice Cream Man series is a modern day version of “The Twilight Zone”, with macabre stories, all of them thought-provoking. Ice Cream Man #36 is another great tale, this time focusing on a sailor named Winslow who lost his daughter when she was swallowed whole by a whale. Winslow becomes obsessed with finding the whale, convinced his daughter is still alive, but he’s not prepared for what he finds at the end of his journey. Rural mystery and urban horror collide in this character-driven meditation on obsession, mental illness, and faith from the creators that writer BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS said “will go down as one of the greatest comic teams of all time!” Each issue of CREEPSHOW will feature different creative teams with uniquely horrifying standalone stories. At a first glance, these are simple and entertaining stories that are thinly connected to one another. However, when one dives deeper, there is much to be enjoyed and thought about when reading them.
