To be honest, I enjoyed the parts about surviving in Alaska, Ernst’s transformation and integrating with the community a lot more than and the parts about abuse. This is semi-unfortunate, since the novel becomes increasingly about Ernst’s violent temper as the novel progresses.

Cora will do anything for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. Thirteen-year-old Leni, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, has little choice but to go along, daring to hope this new land promises her family a better future. The Nightingale is an epic love story and intimate family drama about two sisters in France, caught up in a world at war, living in a country under siege, who will have to do the unthinkable to survive. I’m rereading now and I know I’m gonna wail when I’m reading the last chapters. But at least ending was not dramatic like Nightingale (thanks to the author for not being merciless this time)

They have a funeral for Geneva. Leni meets Aly, Matthew's sister. Cora gives Tom Walker her condolences and Ernst gets jealous. They argue after the funeral, and Ernst hits Cora. Leni realizes that it has happened before but this is the first time she's seen it. Time was not something she usually paid much attention to. On the homestead, the bigger picture mattered-the darkening of the sky, the ebbing of the tide, the snow hares changing color, the birds returning or flying south. That was how they marked the passage of time, in growing seasons and salmon runs, and the first snowfall." Leni is finally able to tell him about their son. She says she wants them to raise MJ together. Matthew tells Leni he still loves her. What do you think about Ernt’s character and how he treats his wife and daughter? Do you think he could have sought support in the 1970s even if he wanted to?

I’m so glad you found your way here. The Nightingale is a book that really means a lot to me. To be completely honest with you, I did everything I could not to write it. But when research led me to the story of a nineteen-year-old Belgian woman who had created an escape route out of Nazi-occupied France, I was hooked. I realized that with all the World War II fiction and non-fiction I had read, I hadn't read this story, and I believed it deserved to be told. That’s the thing. The book takes the worst case scenario for EVERY character. Every single character, even Leni, is the least of the best possibilities.
