As a hypnotherapist, my first introduction to hypnobirthing was pure hypnosis with some relaxation, breathing and knowledge about your body, which is brilliant for re-framing. It’s putting the hypno, back into hypnobirthing so you really get the best tools underpinned by the latest evidence. We work in close contact with Independent Midwives, the National Childbirth Trust and other therapists, including acupuncturists, reflexologists, doulas, and aromatherapists to help you achieve the birth you want. Published to great reviews in 2014, the book will help you to understand how your thinking plays a role in how your baby’s birth will unfold. When you are not 100% in the present moment you are using your imagination and this is a form of hypnosis and light trance.

I think the mind-body connection is real and important but a lot of the language used to talk about women’s bodies and pregnancy and labor drives me nuts.

This class has hypnosis interwoven all the way through it – if anything some other hypnobirthing classes I see aren’t a representation of what hypnosis is! Your may want a caesarean, you may not and be feeling upset that your hypnobirthing plans have gone out of the window. It’s a bit like Spiritual Midwifery but without the truly entertaining trippy hippie plot digressions of that classic of the genre. Maybe you’ll have better luck than I did at maintaining a state of meditation from start to finish, but just warning you that this book makes it sound like a peace of cake compared to what it actually feels like. This way you can create your own tweaks and adjustments to the material so that they work far more effectively and are adaptable if things take a different path.There is a subtle difference between the use of mindfulness and hypnosis which is applied to the course. Try listening to them at different times of the day, with and without headphones, and using in the positions outlined in the book (see pages 00).

This course will be a small group so it means you get to focus on your needs and breakdown any fears or worries you have around birth. I'm always happy reply to questions and am interested in the process of change that happens internally as you learn about options and the power of your mind, rather than just giving people a set of techniques. Sophie's voice is so soothing throughout and it felt like a warm and kind mentor was in the room with me, supporting me with my birth preparations, every time I listened. You’ll learn some beautiful conditioning tools to make that as easy as possible, so things happen without you even thinking about it!
