As someone who lives in a place that’s often overlooked and even maligned, I deeply related to how LaDelle finds beauty in the ordinary, with her love of Detroit shining through in her writing. It might not be glamourous, but it’s home. I absolutely adored this story. From the very start I was enamored with these two characters. Both of them were very well-developed and likable. It was so easy to get behind them and cheer them on. Dapo Adeola, Tracy Darnton, Joseph Coelho and Chitra Soundar are among the 19 authors and illustrators longlisted for the Inclusive Books for Child... Mom follows me into the kitchen. “You’ll find love one day. And stop drinking pop in my mugs! Use a glass like a civilized human being.” Love Radio is a great YA addition to a school library. It offers young people a down-to-earth romance to enjoy with great characters full of ambition and positive attitudes. With mature themes, this book should be considered as suitable for older students. I predict it will be a popular loan as the challenge in the blurb (Prince has just three dates to persuade Dani that he is worth falling for) will tempt any teen looking for a modern day love story.

Overall (and in spite of these distracting plot choices) it’s a necessary story for young teens on what is and isn’t a healthy relationship to maintain in one’s life as well as how valuable growth is. Additionally, I liked how they learned to support each other and help one another work through their difficulties. For someone who’s so cynical about love, Dani actually has a gold standard example of it in her parents, who are still truly, madly, deeply in love with each other, as well as uplifting and supportive of her. I repeat these exercises a few times, until the pressure in my chest begins to lessen and my breath slows.

Meanwhile, most of the guys I know are way too shallow and self-absorbed. They send messages telling their new pursuits how sexy they are. Dudes hit you up depending on how valuable you are online; how many likes and comments you get from your most recent selfie. But the worst of it is, guys don’t show respect. No matter how you “present” yourself, how you act, what you do or don’t do, a guy will still push it to the limit. Make you feel uncomfortable. Won’t respect your wishes when no means… no.The narrators did a good job telling this story, but at times the reading fell flat, however this didn’t take away from the overall story. Prince’s moments of bringing up his loved ones disabilities to get a gotcha out of other people rubbed me the wrong way, though. It always felt unnecessary and with the sole intention of making people feel immense regret over making him feel Briefly embarrassed by off-hand comments. I also have to wonder how he put up with educating misogynistic and willfully ignorant boys around him for so long in spite of seeing them ignore his discussions on a loop until suddenly they care at the very end of the novel. I mean at what point do you accept that some people know the difference between rift and wrong and choose wrong out of boredom or because they believe they’re an exception to responsibility? We didn’t see growth from that side friend—just an entire book of him being a douche and a last minute switch during the resolution. Very odd. And how the novel handles a discussion about the validity of community college was very ugly. It fully took me out of the book for a little bit.
