Dufftown is Diageo's second largest distillery in terms of production, behind the recently built Roseisle facility, opened built in 2009. No less than a staggering 5.8 million litres of spirit are produced at Dufftown, of which 97% goes to blends such as Bell's, Dewar's and Johnnie Walker. We may sell, license, transfer, assign or in any other way dispose of the Service (including Members) to any third party without any notification to you, e.g. (but without limitation) in connection with any reorganization, restructuring, merger or sale, or other transfer of assets. On the palate lots of malt some wood and a bit of sherry but nothing exciting happens after that. It has no legs so to speak.

With solid business acumen and a private railway siding, the Williams gave Glendullan a healthy start in life. So solid in fact that it took the barley shortages of the Second World War to halt production – though the momentous world event caused Don’t get me wrong, this is not bad but it is certainly not good either, it’s just bland (I think you get the message). It’s as flat as the bottle it comes in. Thin, delicate and oily, the whisky floats in the mouth and tingles a little on the tongue. The fruitiness is pronounced here, as well. The apple in particular stands out. Orange toffee, roasted nuts and brown sugar round off the less complex but quaffable single malt. Every now and then, the alcohol bites a little, despite the low 40% abv. Finish Review time: a glossy amber pour with those oily streaks some whiskies have that make things appear has though you were on a very hot summer day when you look through your dram, you know what I mean? Like blurry and wavy. It usually means velvety textures, so I like it.

Nose: Bubble gum. Dense fruit punch aromas, Red Vines, and a hint of anise. A rest in the glass neither adds nor removes anything from the equation. Palate: Fairly standard. Not exactly the best-tasting whisky in the world, but not offensive either. More woodiness, a touch of sugar/caramel and a little fire to warm you up. As it develops the fire recedes and it progresses quite nicely onto the finish. The town housed seven distilleries at one time. Such density of distillation inspired the slogan “Rome was built on seven hills but Dufftown stands on seven stills”. The seven were Mortlach, Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Convalmore, Parkmore, Glendullan and Dufftown itself. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. Smell: Lots of classic Speyside fruits at first. There’s apple, pear and citrus – both orange and lemon. Aromatic cinnamon spice. Hobnob biscuits. My high school woodwork classroom! Caramel and honeycomb. Perhaps a touch of peach.

I find myself drinking more and more just to get that second or two of pleasure in the finish, but the roughness/wood-shaving aspect of the palate is drying my mouth and making it harder to enjoy that fleeting sweetness. The finish is actually rather long with lots of sherry and some more wood at the end, a bit bitterness as well but not unpleasant. Taste: Again very bland, at the risk of repeating myself (oops too late) it tastes of…well…whisky and not much else. There’s a very, very, very slight liquorice tinge and the last moment. I’m no expert, but I enjoy the character of single malts. Not everyone likes the flavour of every single malt, but they all have a distinct personality or they are not single malt. The Singleton Of Dufftown 12 Years is a great starter whisky, perfect for the summer and exactly what you would call an easy sipper. The Scotch has little that disturbs, but also nothing that stands out.

The Dufftown range includes 12, 15 and 18-year-old expressions and there have been various no-age-statement releases including Tailfire and Spey Cascade. The Singleton regularly resides among the top five best selling single malt brands in the world. The town of Dufftown was founded in 1817 at the meeting point of two rivers. It was built in an attempt to provide employment for men returning from the Napoleonic Wars. Located in the Speyside region, the town would find itself at the centre of a distillation boom, following the passing of the Excise Act in 1823. A straightforward, nutty and malty single malt from Speyside, the Singleton of Dufftown was released to replace the Singleton of Auchroisk. It’s aged in a high proportion of European oak casks.It is like that person you are introduced to (usually at work) who’s name instantly does out of your head and you’ve totally forgotten five seconds after they’ve walked away or left the room. I have read – and I’m not sure I believe this – that The Singleton was recently the fifth best-selling brand of single malt scotch in the world. News to me. Nose: Dried hay, woody, nutty, shoe polish (?) a bit chemical. Resembling blended whisky smell at first, rather rough. After a few minutes it does settle down and open up, with floral aromas coming out. Touch of orange too. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. Well... some 6 years later I still have about a quarter of the bottle left. After a few trials and errors I found the best recipe to utilise this whisky - Marie-Helene's apple cake: Finish: There's a nice amount of sweetness and fruitiness in the finish. The fire of the first sip falls away with a very nice mouth-filling sweetness but it's lamentably short. Bit of burnt toffee at the end. Built in 1897, the last of seven distilleries founded in Dufftown, Glendullan was the brainchild of blenders from Aberdeen by the name of William Williams and sons. Bell’s was later absorbed by DCL and Dufftown joined their impressive portfolio of distilleries. Though it continued to produce spirit for use in blends, Dufftown as a single malt would soon have its moment in the sun.

Diageo set out in 2015 to have the best selling single malt in the world – with the three brand The Singletons concept. Never mind that three different malts can not be the best selling single malt – sic! There are hardly any official bottlings. Besides this 12 Year Old, there is also a Singleton of Dufftown 15 Year Old.
