Nearing 30 and working on Wall Street, Bix wanted to do something more worthwhile. He relocated to Boston and started working at WGBH, one of the country’s most innovative PBS stations. There he met Monty Stark, WGBH’s resident “music man.” When Bix set out to create an all new WGBH program, Hoagy Carmichael’s Music Shop, a children’s show revolving around his father’s 1958 children’s album Hoagy Carmichael’s Havin’ A Party, Stark was tapped to do the music. The resulting reimagination of Hoagy Carmichael’s recording was used for the show, and issued on jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal’s AJP label. The recording features Monty Stark on vibes, saxophonist Carl Atkins, Phil Morrison on bass, Vinnie Johnson on drums and John Abercrombie on guitar.

Regarded as one of several standouts from the band’s landmark fall ‘91 tour, this stop in Hampton is certainly worthy of its lore. In addition to having all the hallmarks of a quintessential latter era Jerry Garcia Band performance, this night featured a very special guest: Virginia’s own Bruce Hornsby, joining on electric piano for the first and only time. The setlist is typically well-balanced, mixing road-tested staples, like the show opening “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” along with more recent additions to Garcia’s songbook like Van Morrison’s “Bright Side of the Road” and the show-closing “What A Wonderful World.” Playing with Hornsby always seemed to ignite a spark within Garcia and this proved to be no exception with their potent chemistry fueling lively versions of “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox,” “You Never Can Tell (C’est La Vie)” and “Midnight Moonlight.” Over a decade in the making, this new collection, Light in the Attic & Friends, features an incredible cast of legendary artists covering songs that the label Light in the Attic has re-released over the past 22 years, including Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band covering Sixto Rodriguez, Iggy Pop & Zig Zags covering funk queen Betty Davis, Ethan & Maya Hawke covering country great Willie Nelson, Angel Olsen covering folk singer Karen Dalton, 88-year old electronic pioneer Roedelius covering Mali guitar gods Tinariwen, and Mac DeMarco covering Japanese master Haruomi Hosono.

Levine as Avco Embassy Records. Many of the artists on their roster, including Donnie Elbert, the Softones, Chocolate Syrup, Limmie & the Family Cookin' and Della Reese, recorded their soulful takes of popular songs including Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, Donovan’s “Hurdy Gurdy Man”, The Supremes’ “Reflections” and “Love Is Here & Now You’re Gone”. Malmsteen's first U.S.-based band was Alcatrazz, he was a brief member of another obscure Los Angeles-based metal band called Steeler. The group also featured future Keel frontman Ron Keel (bassist Rik Fox and drummer Mark Edwards also rounded out the band), and the quartet's music was similar to the pop/party metal that was ruling the Sunset Strip at the time. The band was one of the first to be signed to Mike Varney's Shrapnel label (one that has since become synonymous with highly technical guitar shredders), resulting in a lone self-titled release from 1983 before their breakup shortly thereafter. Although the album failed to make much noise upon release, it became a cult classic for fans after Malmsteen and Keel.
