Once again, this is almost entirely NOT Syrp’s fault. They did a pretty amazing job of making setup extremely simple; not requiring any allen keys and only one coin/washer to fully tighten the main camera plate/foot. All of the threaded aspects of the Genie units themselves are conveniently spring-loaded and interchangeable, by the way. Wireless Setup Quirks & Firmware Updates The very first time I set up the entire rig, I didn’t need to read any instructions at all. It was completely self-explanatory, from how all the different parts go together, to the dialing in of keyframes on the app.

Using the Genie on a slider is a little more difficult as the cords have to be pulled tight, but not too tight otherwise the Genie won’t thread through the cord. Also, setting up the cords can be a little fiddly at first. Value is about much more than price alone, or even a straightforward spec sheet VS price comparison. There are many other factors involved, from very subjective things like convenience & user-friendliness to more objective things like long-term durability. Also, you can set up your own dolly system with a skateboard and fixed points for the cord to wrap around. For me, having that extra length is a real bonus and I can’t wait to play around with that function. Okay, the world of video/timelapse motion is enormous, so we’d better categorize the different types of equipment. The first big way to categorize everything is, whether you’re controlling the motion yourself, by hand, or are using motorized control. I’d old school and I’ve always used an intervalometer for my time-lapses. It’s only been in the past year or so that I’ve switched to Magic Lantern (an internal intervalometer than you can install onto your SD card), and I love how easy that is to use. Well the Syrp Genie beats the lot. The Genie has a really simple display. All you have to do is set the recording time (say 20 minutes) and the interval (four seconds) and it works out this will give you 12 seconds of footage. Lastly, you can also add more accessories that suit specialized needs, such as a product turntable, a Tilt Platform so that you can easily do 3-axis motion with your slider at any angle. Syrp Genie II Pan Tilt Linear Demo Reel: Video & Timelapse FootageThe Syrp Genie Micro is designed to slide on and attach to your camera’s hotshoe. It’s extremely lightweight (29g) and small (5.2 x 5.2 x 1.7 cm). A full list of cameras that are compatible with Syrp’s Camera Control can be found here. Syrp Genie Micro key features: In terms of use cases, Syrp notes that the Genie Micro can be used to capture holy grail time lapse videos. You can easily adjust ramp exposure settings on your camera as conditions change without the risk of jostling or moving your camera. You can also control multiple cameras by using more than one Genie Micro. Amid a pandemic, it may also be useful to remotely control a camera for portraits or video, allowing you to maintain a safe distance from others. I do wish it could do more movements and integrate panning and linear movements at the same time, but I have no doubt Syrp will release an update for this in the future.
