Though I struggled through the first third of the book, once I got to the half-way mark I couldn't stop! Some of the writing, though intentional as it is, made it hard to read and somewhat difficult to relate to. The Kaal tribe, I understood, were not as progressive as the dragons and their speech reflected that. But needing both a huge character list at the beginning of the book and a long glossary at the end made it difficult to stay immersed in the story. Suzanna "Zanna" Martindale – A character that first appears in Icefire and becomes David's girlfriend. She is a college student like David, as well as, in the beginning, a Goth. When Gretel stops serving Gwilanna, Gretel becomes Zanna's dragon. Zanna is a sibyl like Gwilanna but she is not as powerful. She is at times very zany and amusing. She is also the mother of David's child, Alexa. She bears the mark of Oomara on her forearm, which grants her many abilities, one of which being the ability to transform into a raven. She lived with the Pennykettles for five years, but then was given a house by the deceased Henry Bacon (who conveniently resided next door), and both she and her daughter relocated there.

Originally his writing was confined to songs and he didn't turn to fiction until he was 32. His first piece of work was a 250,000 word story about polar bears for his wife, Jay, to accompany a stuffed polar bear he had bought her as a Christmas present. The Last Dragon Chronicles series is very divisive. This is especially true for ‘The Fire Within’. The first book in the series, ‘The Fire Within’ tends to either convert readers into followers of Chris d’Lacey or it creates in them a complete disinterest for the author’s work. In Icefire, Lucy creates a new dragon named G'reth. He is a wishing dragon that can grant wishes that would benefit dragon kind. David becomes the owner of this dragon because he was the one who named him (with Gadzook's help). But fate seems to be dictating an unusual course for David when his college tutor, Dr. Bergstrom, sets him an essay on the existence – or not – of dragons. The tantalising prize is a fully funded research trip to the Arctic, which seems just within his grasp. David starts to research the subject and soon discovers a connection between dragons and the Arctic. Then, evidence begins to mount that somewhere in the neighbourhood is a polar bear. Beginning to wonder whether it is only a coincidence or could deeper forces be at work, David begins to uncover more about the dragons. He finds himself drawn to a time when dragons really did exist, and their secrets were guarded by the polar bears of the Arctic. David must open his mind to the legend of dragons if he is going to have any chance of winning the research trip. Meanwhile, the evil sibyl, Gwilanna, appears with an evil plot, and the secret of the dragons is revealed. If she is to be defeated, David must discover the link between an ancient legend about the fire tear of the last dragon, Gawain, and the frozen north. The keys to solving the puzzle are his new girlfriend, Zanna, and Dr. Bergstrom, who proves to have more mysteries than meets the eye. Liz Pennykettle and her daughter Lucy are two of these humans--and they are descendents of the woman who caught the tear of the "last dragon". The plot can be found by googling--what I love are the characters--David Rain, the central male figure with his special connection to both dragons and polar bears. Liz and Lucy, with their red hair, green eyes, and magical connection to the little pottery dragons they create. And Zanna, a young woman who discovers she is a sybil. The Fire Within follows David, a geography student looking for a place to stay. He moves into the spare room of the house of Liz Pennykettle. Liz and her daughter Lucy are pretty strange. Liz makes dragons out of clay, and the house is covered with them. But the words of squirrel-obsessed Lucy seem to imply that the dragons are more than just pretty ornaments. And as strange things begin to happen around the house, David begins to suspect that there's more to the Pennykettles than meets they eye. You get to read a lot more about David in this story, as he has finally returned into everyone’s lives after quite the long time and is beginning to get closer to everyone again. What’s even more interesting about the story in this book is that you are about to meet a few more dragons than the clay ones that Elizabeth creates and brings to life.

This is a charming little story. It has surprisingly low stakes for a book about living dragon statues. Honestly, take out the dragons and you still have a solid contemporary story about saving an injured squirrel from the perils of suburban living. It's a fun, fast-paced story that you can easily breeze through, and it's got some real heart. There are some moments of genuine emotion, some surprising twists, and some pretty great atmospheric and emotional writing. There were some parts where I began to feel it was a little bit dragged out, which is surprising for such a short book.

After that, we leave it all to you to find out if these characters have what it takes to stop this great evil threat that is about to destroy everyone and finally save everyone they love and restore peace. And the final part of this story is where you get to see how this epic journey into a different place finally ends, but not before you meet a couple more characters who are about to make the ending a lot more thrilling. There are a few, who are known as the evil Ix who have managed to take over and gain control over one of the majestic firebirds which is something that brings its own thrilling events and situations.

Sophie Prentice – David's first girlfriend who dies in Dark Fire. First appears in The Fire Within as a veterinarian working at The Wildlife Hospital. Also tried to help them when Conker, one of Lucy's squirrels, was injured. Part one is where you find out about how the author has managed to expand the universe in which the previous stories are set and where the characters live as you read about a few other characters in this one who actually live on another planet, a planet called Co:pern:ica. This is also where you get to meet David, another character named David who is 12-years-old and is the son of Harlan and Eliza Merriman. Part Two Gorn: The series has plenty of dark and violent moments, especially Fire Star, but Dark Fire is suddenly bloody as hell. Things get a lot more interesting now as the dragons of Pennykettle are desperate to stop and destroy the evil Ix so they summon David and Rosa, the characters you met in the previous book from the world of Co:pern:ica, to help them in this definitely difficult battle for survival. What It Takes You also get to meet another thrilling character in this book, Alexa. She is David’s daughter and the author is giving us hints that Alexa might just be the only person, who will have what it takes to bring down the mighty Gaia and save countless lives in the process. As you read this book, chapter by chapter, you also get to read a thing or two about the Arctic in every chapter as you get to find out, piece by piece, what exactly happened in this mysterious place as this knowledge still remains a mystery to many. Few SurprisesThere is also another thrilling fact that you get to find out in this book and that is the fire tear, the one thing that Liz uses to give her precious clay dragons life. The aura from this fire tear, that gives life to these dragons, is kept in a snowball in her freezer. However, she doesn’t let David find that out just yet, as she only tells him that this snowball in the freezer is just a memory from past events. Zanna Something weird is happening at the Arctic again and a huge and mysterious mist is forming there in which all of the polar bears have disappeared and out of which was emerging a colony of huge dragons. A particular dragon called G’Orela will definitely make your reading experience with this one a lot more interesting. Return of Dragons Meaningful Echo: In actions, the ending of Snigger and the Nutbeast mimics those of the ending of the third book. The hero (Conker/David) is dead, but there's Someone to Remember Him By.
