You'll need to put in serious work to actually get the score improvements you want, though. In the following sections, we explain the best ways to get the most out of each SAT book we recommend. The tests don't offer any other instructional material. If you're bad at algebra, you can't rely on this resource alone. These tests are just that—practice tests and practice questions. Nothing else! It breaks down critical skills and grammar rules so you can study them individually. By learning the rules of grammar and usage, you'll be able to apply them to practice problems. Rather than just choosing an answer that sounds right, Meltzer's book will teach you all the rules you absolutely must know to get a good SAT Writing score.

The recommended SAT prep books can be very useful in getting you ready, but they can also feel overwhelming and repetitive, not to mention expensive. In my experience with thousands of students, SAT Reading is the most difficult section score to improve. This section uses logical reasoning skills that aren't as easily mastered as math concepts or grammar rules are. As a result, it's extremely important to learn what kinds of questions will be asked and how you can approach them in a systematic way. The best way to excel at SAT Writing is to understand the grammar rules and how they appear on the test. You also need to answer a lot of high-quality practice questions to ensure you learn the patterns of the SAT (that's how we designed our online SAT program to teach you grammar!). There are hundreds of books available for year six. We have selected ONLY the ones we think are most useful and included them below.For these reasons, I recommend Steve Warner's series of SAT Math books. He's written multiple SAT prep books for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students, and has a set of 240 SAT Math problems organized by topic and difficulty. You'll learn that the SAT is designed to be a predictable, standardized test. It needs to test basic concepts so that it can be administered nationwide to all students, but it also needs to be difficult, so it often distorts questions in a weird way.

If you plan to study just five hours or so, your choice of book won't make much difference. In this case, it's best to focus on taking an official SAT practice test and reviewing your answers. With such little prep time, your score won't go up much in the end, so don't expect any miracles.

Subject-Specific Books: These are by far the best books to use to better your SAT Reading, Math, and Writing skills. Take advantage of the diagnostic tests provided so you can gauge your starting level. If you can get a baseline SAT score, that would even be more helpful. These pre-tests usually come with an answer key to help you determine what sections and areas you have to focus on moving forward.

You have to print out the PDFs yourself to be able to work through them on paper. But in my opinion, this is better than having to buy the tests as hard copies (more on this later). Pay attention to details indicated in the book, like the date it was published or if the material is updated. 5. Seek Advice From Your Teachers Choose these guides if you're scoring below a 600 on a section, and you want to boost your score to at least a 600 level.Its style might not be for everyone. This book is a big, traditional SAT prep book with a straightforward approach. While some students might appreciate or prefer this, others might find it boring and dull. It offers helpful strategies for answering questions. While your English class might leave more room for subjective interpretation, the SAT Reading section does not. This book helps you locate the one unambiguously correct answer on reading comprehension questions. It contains four full-length practice tests. Most importantly, only one of those practice tests is a paper test in the book, while the other three are online exams. This is so you’ll get realistic digital practice for the all-digital exam!
