A game lasts 6 rounds with 4 players (5 rounds with 3 players, 4 rounds with 2 players). The first 3 rounds each comprise 6 phases. Thereafter, each turn comprises 5 phases: One of the most interesting aspects of Troyes is how it scales at different player counts. Playing a two player game (I have yet to play solo) feels broad with a wide variety of options and depths of turns you can take. On the other hand, playing with four is incredibly tight. You start out the game with fewer dice and your turns are more precise. Each die becomes more valuable and the anxiety of each decision ratchets up. Both ends of the spectrum are uniquely positive experiences and I can’t say I prefer one over the other. The pieces are a little thin but, in general, totally usable. For perspective, these pieces are slightly thinner than the hexes in Castles of Burgundy.

Another great thing about Troyes is you do not get tired of it after multiple plays. The more you play Troyes, the more you love it. Random choice of the action cards in the beginning helps you experience the game in a new way every time you play it. There can be a run-away leader problem in the game. If a player gets a plurality of dice and money early on, it’s easy for them to pull ahead without giving other players a realistic chance to catch up. Input Randomness versus Output Randomness You must first hire a tradesman by paying the amount in deniers indicated in the upper-left part of the card. Place a citizen of your color on a free space on the card to act as the tradesman. The Event cards in the queue take effect from left to right, beginning with Marauding. There are 2 types of events: In fact, if you can figure out whose principles the other families follow, you can maximize your own fame, because each family will be scrutinized by all of these famous figures.
