To test the performance of the Deco, I initially setup just a single node and tested its maximum Wi-Fi speeds when standing just 2m away from it. This provides a good baseline indication of how it compares to other normal routers. And, it compares reasonably well. In contrast, the Orbi boasts AC3000 Wi-Fi speeds, the BT Whole Home has AC2500 and the Velop has AC2200. As such, for raw speed the Deco is someway behind its rivals, though by the very nature of distrubuted Wi-Fi systems, this isn’t always noticeable in conventional tests. However, it falls into a slightly awkward middle-ground between the cheaper but faster and easier to setup BT Whole Home, and more expensive but even faster and more capable alternatives such as the Netgear Orbi and Linksys Velop. It’s not a bad option but as a latecomer to the mesh shin-dig, it hasn’t brought a good enough party favour to out-do the other guests.

There are a number of different Tp-Link mesh devices under the name Deco ranging from ₹2500 per unit to ₹50,000 per unit. The good news is, all Decos can be meshed together as per your requirement. The W7200 uses the TP-Link Tether app for iOS and Android mobile devices, and can also be managed via a web-based console. The mobile app opens to an Overview screen, which contains an Internet icon and displays a list of online and offline devices that have joined the network. Tap the Internet icon to view a list of network nodes, their location, and which clients are currently connected to each node. Here, you can assign bandwidth priority and flip a switch to deny access to any client. I would also expect the Deco W7200 to easily outperform the dual-band version of the Netgear Nighthawk mesh router and also Nest Wifi, which doesn't support Wi-Fi 6 at all. That said, I tested both of those systems before upgrading to Wi-Fi 6 testing equipment here at home, so I'll save the direct, numerical comparisons until I've had a chance to re-test them. Next, I tested performance from a floor above (Test 1), followed by two separate locations a floor above that (Test 2 and Test 3). Setting up the Deco system is largely very simple. Like the Linksys Velop, it’s all done via an app on your phone, with both Android and iPhone supported. Compared to other mesh systems then the Deco isn’t setting any records, but it’s on par. An important aspect of this new breed of wireless solutions is that they’re not the traditional routers and extenders that the more tech savvy are used to. Gone are they unruly antennas of yore, replaced by stylish designs and simple interfaces.All WAN/LAN ports will operate as either WAN or LAN ports. Only one port can serve as a WAN port at a time. Each mesh router/Wi-Fi system we’ve looked at so far has had a slightly different set of features. The Netgear Orbi is a two-node system designed to replace your existing router; it focuses on a particularly fast connection between its two nodes. The Linksys Velop is a three-node system that can either take over from your router or just take on Wi-Fi duties. The BT Whole Home is designed purely for Wi-Fi, with an existing router taking care of everything else. No wall mount. This is very frustrating. But still so many people, like me, have no option other than to wall mount the device. Results were similar for the W7200 satellite node. Its score of 528Mbps on the close-proximity test was faster than the Eero Pro 6 (455Mbps) and the TP-Link Deco X20 (449Mbps) nodes, but couldn’t match the Asus ZenWiFi XT8 node (675Mbps). At 30 feet, the W7200 node scored 475Mbps, impressive compared with the Eero Pro 6 (353Mbps) and the TP-Link Deco X20 (301Mbps). Still, the Asus ZenWiFi XT8 took top honors again, with a score of 619Mbps. Each Deco X20 unit is set up as the host or satellite in the installation process, and each have four internal antennas. As is the case with its competitors, none can be aimed or replaced. Based on Qualcomm’s Networking Pro 400 chipset, the Deco X20 is powered by a 1GHz quad-core processor. It carries 4GB of RAM and 1GB of solid-state storage of its firmware and commands. Able to connect up to 150 devices, the Deco X20 has an AX1800 rating, meaning that it's rated at a peak throughput of 1.8Mbps.
