The president at Holy Communion (who, in accordance with the provisions of Canon B 12 ‘Of the Ministry of the Holy Communion’, must have been episcopally ordained priest) expresses this ministry by saying the opening Greeting, the Absolution, the Collect, the Peace and the Blessing. Sacramental bread, also called Communion bread, Communion wafer, Eucharistic bread, the Lamb or simply the host ( Latin: hostia, lit.'sacrificial victim'), is the bread used in the Christian ritual of the Eucharist. Along with sacramental wine, it is one of two elements of the Eucharist. The bread may be either leavened or unleavened, depending on tradition. I’ve got absolutely nothing against Communion wafers (I’ve watched more nuns-making-wafers videos on YouTube than I care to admit). However, I love the ways homemade bread can become a formative practice for the baker while emphasizing the communal nature of the Eucharist meal for the congregation. So many different hands, cupboards, ovens, and neighborhood grocers bring this simple bread to our common table, where it becomes something holy as we eat it together in our Father’s house. Teaching Through Baking It may be used as a separate service of preparation. When used in this way, there should be added at the beginning a greeting and at the end the Peace and the Lord’s Prayer. Hymns, psalms and other suitable liturgical material may also be included. A local congregation is called an assembly and the building in which it meets is called a gospel hall. The Brethren have no ministers. Each assembly is run by a group of elders who care for the spiritual needs of the people. They are assisted by deacons who look after practical things, like repairs to the building. If the milk (or other liquid) is too hot for you, it will be too hot for the yeast. How to Serve This Bread for Communion I have made several other breads for their quarterly Communion services, and most would be considered non-traditional. Different churches have different rules about what can be served at the Communion service. The only real restriction for Nadine’s church was that it shouldn’t be messy. Historically, the Greek Orthodox Church bread, Artos, has been a symbol of the Risen Lord. It is also a symbol of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. The apostles partook of the body and blood of Christ at the Last Supper. They remembered the words and actions of their teacher. At the end of the Liturgy blessed, but not consecrated, bread is distributed to the congregation, and non-Orthodox are often invited to share in this as a gesture of fellowship. Sufficient bread for the whole congregation to share may be broken by the president, if necessary assisted by other ministers, at this point in the service. The Agnus Dei may accompany this action. The newly baptised Christian is now a layperson, a full member of the people of God (the 'Royal Priesthood'). All Christians are called to be witnesses to the Truth.
