We fully accepted the idea that a strong man shouldn't have to be so buff that he couldn't walk through a normal door. Speaking of which, Jackson hosts the second commentary with visual effects artists William Randall Cook. Jason and his crew must overcome incredible obstacles including a 100-foot bronze giant, the venomous Hydraa huge creature with the heads of seven snakes, and a battle with an army of skeletons. Like any film touched by Harryhausen, though, the real stars of the show are his magnificent creations. But you don't watch this one for the melodrama and scenery; you watch for the effects and this is where things break down.

If you are fan of Jason, and of the entire concept that the master stop-motion animator created, then this track is like nectar. The clashing of swords - as the men hack the ropes holding the nets above the Harpies, and especially during the skeleton fight - is now sharper and cleaner. And if you don't want a revamped soundtrack, then you will be pleased to know that the original mono track is included too, and this sounds very good indeed. The stereo spread across the front is welcome and provides some width and spatiality to even the quieter scenes without sounding bogus. Will a pulse-pounding pace, bloody violence and lifelike computer-generated effects create a more real, tangible world filled with heart and emotion? Thanks to the special effects genius of Ray Harryhausen the screen comes alive as these mythical monsters leap into action, making Jason and the Argonauts non-stop, thrill-a-minute entertainment for the whole family.

When my kids were heavily into mythology in junior high I asked if they were shocked by Medea's story. Tipped off by Famous Monsters magazine, many of us waited anxiously for the next jolting effects scene to begin.This is a much superior transfer when compared to the earlier 7th VOYAGE OF SINBAD Blu, which I found generally very good. With a crack crew of athletes and warriors, including the popular Hercules (Nigel Green), Jason sets sail in a proud ship built by Argos (Laurence Naismith). And the skeletal "Children of the Hydra's Teeth" do much more than top the single skeleton warrior in 7th Voyage. No wonder there was no sequel to Jason, as the official follow-up is a timeless lesson of what happens to women who love ambitious and unscrupulous glory-hunters. Flesh tones are as accurate as you can expect for a nearly 50 year old film, and the colors just as vibrant.

Okay, so that clears up the fact that Jason And The Argonauts, after 7th Voyage Of Sinbad and 20 Million Miles To Earth, is not going to blow the minds of those weaned on a strict 1080p diet. Earlier featurettes reprised are the docu "The Ray Harryhausen Chronicles" and the testimonial interview montage "The Harryhausen Legacy"; and the charming John Landis interview with Ray. It is also great the way that these two, who have undergone extensive collaboration together and must these films intimately, manage to keep the track bubbling and interesting for us, too. I'm sure anyone who grew up loving older sci-fi and fantasy films is familiar with the name Ray Harryhausen. Even the middle-aged Laurence Naismith looked righteously rugged, dressed only in a loincloth and clinging to the prow of the Argo: "Pull 'til your hearts burst and your backs break!And the film will probably have its fresh fans who'll look upon the old film as a stale, dusty beast – unworthy of its classic status.
