Using Celadrin with blood thinners should be avoided as both reduce blood clotting, which may, in theory, lead to uncontrollable bleeding. Eicosapentaenoic acids compete with constitutive levels of arachidonic acid in cell membranes for the same desaturation enzymes and produce 3-series prostaglandins and thromboxanes, and 5-series leukotrienes which have low pro-inflammatory potential. The alteration in leukotriene biosynthesis due to higher concentration of omega-3 fatty acids compared to arachidonic acid underlies the anti-inflammatory effects.

In a study of 28 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, elbow, and wrist, Celadrin cream combined with menthol reduced pain and improved functional performance after 1 week [ 4]. In a study on 64 patients with osteoarthritis (OA), taking Celadrin capsules for 68 days improved knee flexibility and decreased aches and pains compared to the placebo group [ 5]. Topical glucosamine cream and gel can significantly reduce the pain of knee osteoarthritis within 4 weeks. One study involving a glucosamine cream found that 100% of those with arthritis of the shoulder gained benefit. Of those with arthritis of the ankle, wrist or elbow, glucosamine cream reduced pain in 75% of people, and it worked in 58% of those with knee osteoarthritis.

Uses

No major side effects were reported in clinical trials for both topical and oral Celadrin [ 4, 3, 11, 5]. An excellent review provides the readers with cogent and unbiased information necessary to help them make the best choice. Needless to say I stopped it at once and now use a herbal cream which I find works better, uses less and has no side effects, but of course is not on prescription. Within a week the cystolic reading had dropped somewhat but not the diastolic which is concerning. I trust that over the next few weeks it will return to normal.
