Daemonic Guidance System: Shoot a shieldbreaker missile at a character without LOS. This would only really be good if Tyrant Castellans popping Trail of Destruction were common. Since they aren’t, it’s terrible. Tzeentchian Pyrothrone: Your Knight is a psyker that can Smite and Deny. Generally if your opponent has good psykers you want this out somewhere. You also always explode if you die from a perils, which is hilarious, especially as it doesn’t say the standard MWs from a perils explosion don’t go off too. List Building Changes . With the Super Heavy Auxiliary detachment becoming free if it matches the faction of your warlord, it effectively adds a free slot to knights who are limited to just 5 units in Super Heavy detachment. Since Chaos Knight Super Heavy Auxiliary detachments act as normal Chaos Knight detachments if you include 3 War Dog models or one big knight, there’s no downside to using this. You should probably always be taking advantage of this, since it lets you access another favor and more importantly lets you split up your drops for deployment, allowing you to spread out more.

Just like Imperial Knights, Chaos Knights get a varying amount of CP from the Superheavy detachment depending on how many TITANIC units are in them. 3 War Dogs gives you 0, at least 1 TITANIC Knight gives 3CP and 3 TITANIC units gives you 6CP. Chaos Knights want to be in full detachments quite a bit more than Imperials do, so you’ll want to consider a detachment of two War Dogs and a larger Knight. Traitoris Ambitions (Faction Traits) As they are presented in the current Index army list, Chaos Knights can’t gain Marks of Chaos to show their favor to one or the other of the Chaos Gods. Marked Knights were a big, flavorful feature of the army in ninth edition 40k, so we expect something like them will reappear when Knights eventually get their 10th edition codex. Harbingers of Dread Devastating Reach: A large number of words for “you can fight a unit on a ruin”. Fine when it’s relevant if you can remember it exists.

Most games will see Chaos Knights players taking Ruthless Tyranny, then supplementing that with Grind Them Down and either a kill secondary or Storm of Darkness. For lists taking an Abominant, Psychic Interrogation and Warp Ritual are also options, though whether they’re a better use of your psychic phase than Winds of the Warp or doing mortal wounds will be a gametime decision, largely based on how readily your opponent can deny your attempts and how badly you need the ability to ignore damage.Tyrannical Court: Extra Warlord Traits. Good, but a lot less good than in Imperials because the traits are less powerful. This is a perfect excuse to massively convert your army. Kromlech, Bitspudlo and many 3D modellers produce conversion bits to transform loyalist Knights into traitors– and neodymium magnets, a modelling saw and drill will allow you to magnetise weapons and get more value out of each kit. Chaos Knights Lore The presence of an Abhorrent-class Knight is enough to spur on the various War Dogs that cluster around them. These auras are more flexible than the targeted bonuses used by Imperial Knights – but the new Bondsman abilities benefit both the Armiger target and the Questoris Knight using them, while a Chaos Knight is unaffected by its own aura. This fundamentally changes the dynamic between lord and squire, as the larger Chaos Knights have little concern for the benefit a War Dog can give them, instead of working in careful concert.

Much like warlord traits, these are vastly less powerful than the Imperial ones, and are made more so by the fact that several plausibly good choices (the melee weapons) are never seen as no suitable Knights get competitive play. There are a few real gems here though The Good Ones Warlord traits are one of the best part of the Imperial Knights book, and one of the most disappointing here. Some of these are fine, but whereas Imperials are chomping at the bit to add them, these are just OK. Engagement Range. Like it or hate it (we aren’t fans), the new 2” ruin engagement range is a big boost to Chaos Knights, who now have an easier time tagging enemy units in melee through ruin walls.The Despoiler variant is the one most people want. It can take Avenger Gatling Cannons, the other variants cannot. AVGs are very good guns, especially when taken in pairs.
