Osti put every design and material through rigorous and continual experimentation: under his instruction, his team tested and re-tested every last fiber used through rubber-coating, emery-brushing, resining, siliconing, oil finishing, bonding, and dying (the latter, with the help of in-house chemists). The book shows inspirations behind the designs of Massimo Osti, as well as how the logos were created with hand drawn notes and sketches for a personal touch. These comprise sketches, photos, advertising campaigns, vintage garment designs that provided inspiration, etc and are designed to give a flavour of life in the Osti Studio. When working on a piece, he rummaged throughout his archive, pillaging anything that took his fancy – a sleeve here, a pocket there – and collaged it back together into something new.

Previously unimaginable forms, shapes, and materials emerged, expressing this sensation: plastic jackets, tone-on-tone. He was one of the first to take screen printing to clothing and pioneered countless new innovations, ranging from garment dying to rubber wool.

A remarkable item, I wanted one so very badly, and in hindsight, I should have bought what became an instant collector’s item. He did not do high fashion but the clothing he invented at his labels Stone Island and CP Company – bold and futuristic at the former, soft and welcoming at the latter – have lost none of their power in the three or four decades since their launch. The material was nylon coated with resin, containing thermosensitive microcapsules which allowed colour change in the dye with change of temperature. It’s no wonder that Osti, with his love of all things functional, was drawn to the design and included it in his first collection for Stone Island. Company to the boom of Stone Island to the later experiments of ICD and Double Use, illustrating the progress with images of original catalogues, extant magazine editorials, advertising, and archival material such as merchandise, sketches and brand labels. The method was unheard of until Osti started his work in the early 70’s, back when CP Company was still Chester Perry, with the idea to remove the stiffness from fabrics.

It would be hard to find a piece of modern clothing that wasn’t in some way influenced by Massimo Osti. Not only was he creating rugged and hardwearing clothing for the consumer but also designed uniforms for Volvo, the Swedish car manufacturers.Used by various armies through the 19th century, the simple but versatile canvas can be used in numerous ways.
