What really stood out about this novel for me was how realistic and raw these characters were written. I could see myself and others in probably every single one of these characters in this story. I thought the inner thoughts and dialogue was absolutely spot on. UPDATE June 2019: They ARE making this into a TV series (or maybe a movie?)! No date given yet, but Nicole Kidman is cast as the spa director. Hot dog! she does a good job intensifying the suspense, and there was one turn in particular that gave me those reader-shivers you want out of a psychological thriller, but there was too much that just didn’t wash, it was too reliant upon coincidence and silly red herrings, too many implausibilities, and a desultory romantic subplot that did ze-ro for the story. Overall, this one is a bit of a departure for Liane Moriarty, but her signature style is etched all through the novel. While the plot is just this side of deranged, the story is a compulsive read, perhaps a little overlong, but otherwise compelling and highly engrossing!!Petski, Denise (2020-08-06). A washed up romance novelist, a family broken by tragedy, a has-been football star, a young couple whose marriage is faltering, the wife who has been left for a newer model and the lawyer who has commitment issues. Nine perfect strangers all broken in their own way looking for a make-over, a rejuvenation.

The author does a fine job of keeping up the suspense while getting on with the story, and she never falters. Leah and Emmy are believable characters (even as we wonder whether Emmy is a creation of Leah’s imagination), and Leah’s journalistic transgression is explained, to my great satisfaction. She doesn't disappoint. While not as amazing as ATMG, it's an engrossing read. Since I finished this on baseball’s opening day, I'll use a baseball analogy. If ATMG was a grand slam, this is a home run. There are three components necessary for a successful book - good writing, strong character development and a convincing plot. Miranda gets the first two spot on. My minor quibbles with this book rested with the story line.As the guests brainstorm (and languish), they hear fire from upstairs. Could it be Masha's cigarettes, her one indulgence? They imagine the fire coming for them. Then, they realize it's not a fire, but the sound of a fire playing on a loop.

I hate when you've been waiting for an author you like to come out with a new book and it disappoints. The good news for me is, there are still some of Moriarty's earlier books I haven't read, so I look forward to those. And who knows? You may enjoy this one more than I did. This was just meh for me. I didn't love the execution of the plot which is a problem and didn't connect with the characters which is also not good. I felt like Megan Miranda had these plot points that she thought would make a good book and then she struggled with how to get from one to the other. Disappointing since I have liked her other books. This was probably a 2.5 but like honestly it wasn't that bad so 3⭐ Kristin Reid of Paste magazine praised the Hulu series for creating a "compelling group of individuals", noting Nicole and Michael's "standout performances" in particular. However, it seems that not everybody agreed with this glowing assessment. We meet all the guests and their quirks and behind the scenes antics. I was laughing out loud throughout this book and the snarky humor and over the top spa stay was a blast! From the start of their 10-day stay at Tranquillum House, the nine guests realize this is not going to be a vacation. First, Yao and Delilah, the spa's resident "wellness consultants," take things out of their bags. Confiscated contraband includes chocolate, alcohol, cell phones, and anything else that falls in the category of "indulgences."I wasn't blown away by the plot in the story but that could just be me, it was a decent enough read that I wanted to see through to the end and for a lazy afternoon reading this fits the bill perfectly. I did doubt the fact slightly that Leah knew so little about Emmy, it's common practice that you learn things about someone the more you spend time with them and she had lived with her twice.
