I got a really weak nose form this, which reading peoples tasting notes for this is probably a little unfair. It was close to the end of the bottle by the time I got around to reviewing it (my girlfriend likes it!) so that may have negatively influenced things. I got some oak with mild vanilla notes, raisins and then some alcohol burn.

It smells like any other proper bourbon, a good bit of caramel with a vanilla twist. There’s some crisp apple in there as well, which brings a bit of bitterness into the mix. Jim Beam starts with a fermented mash containing 77% Corn, 13% Rye, and 10% Malted Barley. That’s more rye that usual for a bourbon, but half as much as Bulleit uses in their spirit. Nevertheless, it still has well over half the grains coming from corn and so meets the legal requirements there.

Short, hot finish. For the low proof (86pf) this is way hotter than it should be and that heat comes without much character to help justify.

However, the Woodford Reserve bourbon reigns supreme when it comes to sheer indulgence.

It drinks warmer than what the stated proof suggests, but adding a large ice ball makes it much more enjoyable. The ice helps to mellow out harsh notes and reduce the heat, while also enhancing the sweetness and oak characteristics. My opinion:The mashbill for the Double Oaked variant comprises 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. This secondary ageing imparts a sweet, oak character to the bourbon while enhancing its fruity, vanilla, and caramel notes. This expression marked the first new addition to the Woodford Reserve lineup in over 15 years. Jim Beam Double Oak is a remix on Jim Beam’s flagship bourbon. Standard Jim Beam is taken for a second period of maturation and placed in another new charred barrel for the finishing duration. The message and underlying theme of the Double Oak are elegantly translated into the sensory experience of the spirit. This makes it a superb Bourbon whiskey to sip have from a nosing glass, like the Schott-Zwiesel one I used for this review. In this review, you will discover Jim Beam’s Double Oak Whiskey as I cover the following topics: I like this, it doesn’t blow you away but a decent sipper and I would like to give it a try from the beginning as this had been sat opened for a couple of months before I even tasted it. Will have to get another bottle and update the review. Its like the Double Oak had so much on top it couldn’t go down smooth and the edge outlasted the burn.
