I liked the 1941 timeline better than the Nancy/Martin one, which I somehow couldn't engage with at all - the story and characters never really came alive for me. I'd happily have read a whole story set in wartime without any need for the present day shenanigans; it was interesting to read how people on the South Coast lived under constant fear of German invasion, and the actions taken to potentially defend themselves - the "secret army" - if it came to pass. I liked the thread about the evacuees, Maisie and Shirley, and their teacher. Elizabeth’s son has just signed up for the army and Elizabeth takes in two evacuated children. Elizabeth and her friend join a secret army in the aim of contributing to the war effort. This story is much slower-paced than I’m used to and took me a while longer to read than some other faster-paced books, but I really enjoyed taking my time with it. I don’t feel it’s a story you’d want to rush, the characters deserved my time and that’s what I gave them. The story revolves around Nancy, who after a tragedy in her family, decides to seek refuge in her grandmother's house, Tall Chimneys. Jane Corry never fails to disappoint. I love all Jane Corry’s books but this is her best yet. So clever, compulsive and twisty with a reveal I never saw coming. But as often happens when I read a dual timeline story, one is able to hold my attention far better than the other. In this particular case, I tended to feel rather indifferent to Nancy and her story. It’s pretty obvious she’s not telling the entire truth about what happened the night of her family tragedy, and there is something rather unsympathetic about her despite everything she’s been through. I never really felt like I connected with her, or even really got to know her. With all the characters, you confront an intriguing conundrum of who are they really , what is their truth and what cloak of disguise are they wearing??? This is an especially good element.I've enjoyed some of Jane Corry's previous books, but unfortunately, despite some strong points, this one didn't really hit the spot for me. I’ve been a long-time fan of Jane Corry’s books, but I fell behind somewhat so it’s been a while since I read one of her books. I feel it’s safe to say her latest one, ‘Coming to Find You‘, is slightly different from other books I’ve read by this author.
