Dialing in is about bringing out the best flavours that your coffee beans have to give. Older supermarket beans, in my humble opinion, lose lots of their flavour by being roasted to a crisp (as these kinds of beans are usually roasted particularly dark) and any delicate flavour notes remaining are likely to be given up to the oxidation process over the period of time that passes before they're used. With the Smart Grinder Pro (and the dose control pro, and all of the integrated grinder machines from Sage) the outer burr has a thread, which enables you to shim it by simply adjusting it to one of the numbered settings, from 1-10. The Breville Control Pro grinds directly whether you’re using a portafilter, a filter basket, a gold-tone filter basket, or a paper filter. It’s a versatile grinder because it allows you to use various filters of your choice. The Dose Control Pro and the Smart Grinder Pro are very easy to maintain. You can remove the hopper and top burr without using tools, giving you easy access to brush out the lower burrs and grind chamber.

So all I actually needed to do in this situation was to take the grind more coarse and use these beans either via the dual walled baskets or for manual brew methods. I know a lot more about grinders these days, so I understand that these don't have “true” burrs, they have “flat grinding wheels” which crush beans, and it's a common misconception that this is what burrs do, but actually, burrs are made to more or less “chew” beans into uniform chunks, not so much to crush them. So it's this crushing with these types of grinders that is the problem. So if you don't need the espresso capability, it's fair to say that purely talking about grinding performance, you're probably not going to experience a great deal of difference in the cup from your extra spend. What you will benefit from, however, is the amazing user-friendliness, ease of use, and lots of features that you won't find on most other options.This is a low-cost grinder, the burrs alone in some commercial grade grinders cost more than this grinder, and some of the grinders at around the one to two thousand pounds mark, or above, will usually, hopefully, produce more consistent particle size.

Coarse grounds are recommended for cold drip to avoid any fine grounds which could make the coffee taste over-extracted.
