I loved the "fantasy" aspect of the novel, when it took us into the world of make-believe, and blended what we know as real with what our brain struggles to makes sense of. Known to Walter as Amy, this woman serves as a shadowy and enigmatic figure in the book, especially as you have no idea who she truly is for most of it.

Yes there is a (big) touch of the supernatural in this book, but for some reason the authors make it seem not that farfetched. Eventually, though, Natasha gets the upper hand on Clint for long enough to make her decision final, and go through with it.Not only can these be useful to remind the reader where they are, but it helps to highlight just how massive the case gets, especially towards the end of the book, as well as tracking Walter’s growing obsession (especially the last one). This entire story of obsession, murder and mystery concludes perfectly in the present, with some truly big moments, as everything comes full circle and twists that have been hidden in plain sight since the start come into the light. Yet he is summoned to the directors office where he meets his fellow new partner Sealey who is also tracking the widow and wants O'Brien on his team. This pattern continues throughout the book, with the story jumping ahead years at a time to show the multiple encounters between Walter and his obsession. This entire story is loaded up with brilliant reveals and shocking twists, and I was honestly surprised and very thrilled in some of the excellent directions that the authors took the story.

While O’Brien has yet to catch up to her, he’s hopeful and willing to take whatever method is needed to stop a killer. I may not do a good job relaying things in a review that is likely to long already but the authors make the connection between the two and sell it very well. Bringing their own unique and counter-balanced personalities to proceedings they ask questions such as: what is happiness?This new genre combines well with the books existing thriller/crime fiction framework to create an intense and exhilarating read that is extremely easy to get into and very, very hard to put down. After Thanos' (Josh Brolin) deadly finger snap killed his family in Avengers: Infinity War, Clint adopted the Ronin persona and took his frustrations out on the criminals who somehow survived the snap.It's not a believable story, in fact it reminds me of one of Patterson's I read years ago about babies being stolen and changed to fairies.

He and his partner find a deceased male on a mattress soaked in blood in a room that is strewn with debris.O'Brien and his partner discover a man bludgeoned to death and a young woman chained to a bathroom sink. Back in the NOW, Commander Rigby of the Detroit PD is facing down against Walter O’Brien and his crew, still threatening to set off the bomb in the night club if they don’t get the person inside that they want. I own copies of the Patterson/Barker collaborations The Coast to Coast Murders and The Noise, but I haven't read them yet.
