Alongside your models you’ll also want to get hold of some paint stripper. There are numerous different paint strippers you may see suggested, including: You Can’t Really get this Wrong, I’ve used Latex and Nitrile without any issues reacting with the IPA. The only risk is that when you are handling the miniature, the spikey bits can pierce the gloves. See the warning section above for how this went wrong for me. Latex gives you more tactile response when handling the minis (and it’s kinky, because Latex). But constant use with some latex products can cause a skin reaction that makes your hands itch and peel. Nitrile removes this issue but you can’t feel the model as easily through them. Whatever you get, don’t get powdered gloves as they will powder your mini. Powdered is fine for stripping, but don’t use them for painting as you will get the powder all over your paint job. If you want to make sure you don’t get any glove piercings, slap on some marigolds. Gloves come in various sizes, so ensure you get the right size. make sure they are nice and tight, there are plenty of sizing guides online. Coatings removed include: Water based coatings, Varnishes, Primers (including aerospace), Primers containing chrome, Oil based paints and Emulsion. Can I paint Biostrip 20 onto larger models rather than dipping them? Yes, Biostrip 20 paint stripper is ideal for painting onto larger objects or models. A plastic bag can help prevent drying out. One method is to pop the desired miniature into a container containing Biostrip 20 and leaving it to soak until the paint comes off freely under running water. This may be the preferred method if you’ve got entire armies to strip and don’t want to spend time scrubbing individual models.Is Biostrip 20 suitable for removing old paint from Warhammer miniatures? Yes, it is very effective at restoring Warhammer models however we have not tested it on every type of miniature/paint/primer combination! Great results have been reported with Warhammer, Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar and other wargaming models This video and also this one specifically describe the use of Biostrip to remove paint from Warhammer minis. Biostrip 20 can be reused so don’t think you need fresh product every time you want to strip a model.

It’s been only 4 days since I published this post and it’s already received quite a lot of interest. in fact, it has been the most popular post on the blog since I launched! There have been a few comments and questions about resin. The duration to leave your models for will vary depending on the type of paint stripper you’re using, as well as what material your models are made of. For Biostrip 20, the perfect time seems to be around 6 hours. Now, I want to stress that I am no chemist, but from what I understand copied from (from Wikipedia) IPA is; Biostrip 20 is our original water based paint stripper designed for use on all “indoor” paints. Virtually odour free it is perfect for use in confined spaces. Also good on most plastics (always test a small area first) including models. Biostrip does go a funny colour after use, but still works fairly well for fresh minis. Some people just leave minis to soak in the biostrip pot itself, and let the gunk accumulate, yet it continues to work fine. I do like you though; dip minis and leave them in a spare tupperware for a few hours and just wash away the leftover goop.Coatings removed include:Water-based coatings, Varnishes, Primers (including aerospace), Primers containing chrome, Oil-based paints and Emulsion. Would it work? yes, I suppose, depending on the brand… would it work as well? again, it may or it may not, depending on the brand. But the point here was that Isopropanol isn’t a brand it’s a cheap product that does the job well and is available from anywhere.

But, the moral of the story is, I didn’t die. So please don’t anybody out there go and die from using this stuff. To be honest, if you are having to put miniatures in three times to clean them, it’s not the best way of cleaning them. I was fairly sure that the last time I bought this for the same price that it was a lot bigger. Its good stuff (i use it to strip paint from miniatures) but I just wish it was in a bigger pot or a little cheaper. isopropyl alcohol is used in your hand rubs in hospitals and doctors surgeries etc anywhere where cleanliness is around but as you go past the 70% barrier it gets more toxic and irritating so wear decent gloves when handling it.In larger quantities, you can collect the solvent waste and bring it to your local waste disposal facility labelled as dangerous waste, they know how to handle it.

The flashpoint of isopropyl alcohol is around 11-13 degrees Celsius so if your going to use it just make sure there’s no sources of ignition around. Boiling point is a different matter. It’s around 82-83 degrees. There isn’t much in the process to Strip Paint off Miniatures but based on my experience using this for a number of years now there are a few things to note. The first of which is that your results (and amount of effort you need to put in) will vary based on how the miniature was initially prepared and what type of paint is on it.
