The most obvious negative is that there isn’t much weight to the sound. Gun blasts in the Deadpool freeway scene aren’t alarming or hard-hitting. You can toggle on the Bass Boost feature, but that’s missing the point. There are mid-range TVs that choose to champion bass, but often to the detriment of other areas of the sound. Last year Panasonic TVs were missing several key streaming apps at launch, and despite updates, Disney+ still won’t be included in 2021, although Panasonic says it is “in discussions” with Disney to rectify this. Ambient Light issues aren’t visible to me. Does the image look better with the lights out, Yes #but what doesn’t#. I have a full set of windows running perpendicular to the TV, that have blinds and therma-curtains on them, so I have pretty good lighting controls. The room lights are on dimmers. I can watch the TV during the day or with the lights on, and it’s not a problem with reflection or the TV not being bright enough. The TV is also Dolby Atmos friendly, although you’ll need to partner it with an external sound system to make the most of the immersive sound format. The screen’s onboard sound system is standard two-channel stereo.

There are only three HDMI ports, which is weak in a world where four is normal (and expected at this point), plus two USBs ports (one a fast v3.0), a digital optical audio out, component AV and Ethernet. in 2021 Panasonic continues its strong tradition of supporting premium features all the way down through the line-up. The set also looks excellent with SDR content, upscaling with a gentle touch. The screen looks splendid with Blu-ray and other HD sources – fine detail gets a lift from the brand’s familiar HCX image processor, and the average picture level is high. The supplied remote control is a good deal less fancy – it’s a big pointy wand with dedicated buttons for Netflix and Freeview Play.Android TV simplifies your entertainment experience. The introduction of the new HCX Pro AI processor in Panasonic’s higher-end sets means that Panasonic has now brought its previous generation HCX processor down to core models such as the JX800 series. So now even these sets will have access to the vast wealth of Panasonic colour science expertise.Like much on the surface of this TV, Panasonic’s user-interface is more a case of evolution, not revolution. The latest version, My Home Screen 5.0, features some changes, such as content highlights as we hover over video streaming services and a pop-up version of the home screen options, but it’s still largely the same as before. It won’t be a candidate for any design awards, but it is clear and easy enough to understand.

Like Dolby Vision IQ, this new format adjusts HDR10+ picture characteristics in accordance with both the source material metadata and the ambient lighting conditions of the room. All 2021 models have Dolby Vision and HDR10+ Adaptive, and Dolby IQ is supported on models down to the JX940. Panasonic is the first manufacturer to produce TVs with both Dolby Vision IQ and HDR10+ Adaptive on board. Prices valid in stores (all including VAT) until close of business on 29th November 2023. The HX800 provides a jumping-on point for Panasonic’s 4K LED LCD models, and sits below the step-up HX900 and HX940. But that doesn’t mean that it’s short of premium niceties: there’s support for both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ advanced HDR formats, which enable a screen to maximise image quality on a scene by scene basis.

Now up to its fifth iteration, Panasonic’s My Home Screen smart platform has proved remarkably resilient – especially since we had a feeling it might give way to the Android OS early on. But Panasonic has made small incremental tweaks, retaining its inherent simplicity while improving usability, including some new contextual menus to help search and curate content. However, basic functionality is unchanged. The HDMI spec is unapologetically v2.0, but we do benefit from ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), which automatically switches in the Game preset when a console is detected.
