The winners were revealed in a lunchtime in-person ceremony at The British Library for the first time since 2019. The story was inspired by Balen’s father-in-law who lives off-grid, and her own love of mudlarking and the outdoors. The Medals are awarded annually by CILIP and the Youth Libraries Group with longlists announced in February, shortlists in March and the winners announced at a ceremony in June. The fish that is won in this book is carried about the whole night and the next day the animal that won the fish tips the fish into a lake. The fact that it is told without words is a great leveller: Pre-readers may be unable to handle the written word, but that doesn’t disqualify them as storytellers.I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly!
