Offering reference-calibre sonics, this spectacular collector’s version provides a clear, transparent, ultra-dynamic, and up-close view of a cornerstone effort that witnesses Adderley and Davis sharing horn duty alone for the only time in their fabled careers – an arrangement that occurred as a result of Adderley having joined Davis’ majestic sextet a year prior. As with rock, I like it “Stoner,” and laid back, with just enough edges to hold my attention, designed around a core that develops and moves me deeper within myself . The composition is actually Hank Jones' "Bangoon", and first appeared on Gigi Gryce's 1957 Jubilee Records album Jazz Lab, with Jones playing piano.

I totally agree with others, a simple high quality gatefold cover would be much much better for presentation and the haptic overall.Throughout its history, Mobile Fidelity has remained true to this goal, pioneering state-of-the-art technologies and setting audiophile standards that remain in place today. Adderley begins his solo from deep inside a noodlebowl of notes, and then changes course, carving out ideas that are much more disciplined.

They’re able to seize and work with them in part because each is rendered with such respectful clarity.

The premium packaging and beautiful presentation of the UD1S Somethin’ Else pressing befit its extremely select status. Compared to Analogue Productions, Impex and Tone Poet, these are really quiet vinyls, this vinyl is damn noisy. As veteran critic Bob Blumenthal observed writing about the album four decades after its release, “The instant rapport achieved by the quintet is thus the product of much shared and common history, though the tensile strength that they create throughout created a totally unique feeling that can be attributed to the sensitive musicianship of all concerned, including the supposedly hard bopping leader and drummer. And then listen as bassist Sam Jones and drummer Art Blakey seize some of those stone-simple pianistic rejoinders and transform them into fuel for further agitation.The musicians might not agree on every particular turn, but their interactions are governed by the shared understanding that the thread of a conversation is too precious to allow ordinary jive showboating to muck up the works. The vinyl composition features a new carbonless dye (hold the disc up to the light and see) and produces the world’s quietest surfaces.
