In Advanced Mode, players get more choices of Island, Climate and Ecosystem cards at the start of the game but the gameplay is the same as Standard Mode. So you and Gaia continue to take turns until you’ve finished your island or when Gaia has gone through her cards twice. In The Pillars of the Earth, two to four players take on the role of rival builders. Your aim? Contribute materials towards the erection (no giggling) of Kingsbridge’s sumptuous cathedral. Worker placement stands at the pulpit, but an assortment of mechanisms emerge from the foundations. Pillars lasts for six rounds, and each occurs in a formulaic, structured manner. Otherwise the set up is very similar to a multiplayer game, you put the little leaf tokens on the board as well as your starting island, climate and terrain, which’ll give you some of your initial scoring goals. In this initial set up, I was on Nishinoshima island (with a sunny and cloudy symbol) with a hemiboreal climate and Monteverde cloud forest ecosystem. I was trying to get as many mushrooms as possible for this ecosystem. These details are lovely, and I feel like I’m learning with a board game! I didn’t know hemiboreal was a word or that it supported a variety of deciduous plants.One of the standout features of this game is the unique score system. Instead of simply tallying points, players will collect Earth tokens as they journey across the board. These tokens represent their contribution to the planet, and can be used to help protect the environment and combat climate change. Each player has an Ecosystem card and there are 2 randomly selected public Ecosystem cards. Player's ecosystem cards can only be scored by the player that owns it. Public Ecosystem cards are scored by all players. On a player's turn, they must choose a main action: Plant (green), Compost (red), Water (blue) or Grow (yellow). The active player gets to do a more powerful version of the action and the other players will do a less powerful version. Then, all players can activate their cards with abilities matching the main action color.

Even if they survive the enemy onslaught, the heroes cannot rest. The more time passes, the larger the threat against them becomes and the threat bar at the top of the app screen slowly fills. It takes everything that’s good about the game Wingspan and makes it all more so, resulting in a gaming experience that’s a little more complex but also provides the satisfaction of building an engine that gets more powerful as the game progresses. Another consideration – or, if you can’t afford the remaining cards – allows you to pass. Got excess, unspent workers? They sit on the Wool Mill location. Later in the round, you’ll earn one coin per worker you placed here. The income you gather could prove vital; you’ll rely on those coins to fund future actions. Squander access to your in-game revenue at your peril. You also use the shared objective fauna board, where you get more points the earlier you meet the objective. Gaia has a fauna card that’ll score her the objectives (and she’ll place her leaf token), but you have flexibility in which one she’ll go for (she’ll always go for the highest number of points). It’s definitely recommended to focus on these in solo as Gaia will come for you if you don’t pay attention to them (like she’s done to me). You also have the option of adding some extra ecosystem cards for scoring beside the fauna objectives.

If you don’t have access to internet, play the game with the photo cards. Take 8 cards and put them face up (questions down) on the table. Each round, one player (starting with the oldest player) is the quizmaster, who asks but can’t answer the questions. The quizmaster will automatically receive 2 cards at the end of each round. In the second round the next oldest player is quizmaster, et cetera.Cards have designated costs (between 2-10) in workers. You have 12 workers to spend every round. Frugal choices could result in you drafting multiple cards. Of your 12, seven are individual, small workers. One is larger, representing five workers. Don’t overlook this. No change gets given for that large worker!
