A person is eligible to enter for the Final FRCA Examination who meets the criteria A, B, C, D and E described below: A. I am determined to find the fairest possible solution to this serious issue. After discussing several options, I, along with relevant College Council members, the Chair of the Examinations Committee, our CEO and senior staff, have agreed that: a) Prior to application for further attempts after the fifth attempt a candidate must: Discuss their final attempt and suitability for anaesthetic training with their college tutor or equivalent. Their college tutor or equivalent must support a further attempt in writing through the submission of the ‘Additional Educational Training form; AET Form1’ at Appendix 8. The form must be submitted to the Director of Education, Training and Examinations at least three months in advance of the date of the next intended sitting. Final FRCA: 300 SBAs offers a wealth of exam questions focussing on the new SBA format. With so few resources available for candidate wishing to practice the new exam format, Final FRCA: 300 SBAs will ensure that trainees have sufficient experience to ensure success in the exam. The Final FRCA Written examination is a summative assessment, blueprinted to Stage 1 and 2 training curriculums. The examination assesses the knowledge required of an anaesthetist in training at the end of Stage 2 training in anaesthetics. The CRQ examination complements the MCQ paper, and whilst both parts test factual knowledge and understanding, the CRQ assesses judgment and the ability to prioritise information. The Written examination forms a gateway to the Final FRCA SOE, which assesses application of this knowledge.

g) A pass in the Primary FRCA Examination does not automatically entitle eligibility to apply for the Final FRCA. The eligibility for the Final FRCA Examination components are listed in Section 7. 6 Final FRCA If applying for the Final FRCA SOE, has passed the Final FRCA written exam within 3 years of the date of the sitting applied for. To be eligible to sit the Final FRCA, candidates no longer need to be in receipt of the UK Core Level Training Certificate (CLTC) or Stage 1 certificate. Candidates must have passed the Primary FRCA examination or an exempting qualification. However, to ensure that candidates are best prepared for this examination, the College recommends that candidates are in receipt of a stage 1 training certificate or equivalent and strongly recommends that trainees do not attempt the Final FRCASOE until they have started Stage 2 training. Candidates should note that sitting the Final Written in stage 1 will not become part of the recruitment portfolio score for ST4. [updated March 2022] 17

The SOE examinations are usually held over a week. At the end of each day of SOE examinations, Successful candidates are listed on a board in the lobby of the college by RCoA reference number. On successful completion of both Primary and Final FRCA examinations, you wouldbecome a fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists by examinationand can use the letters FRCA after yourname. Those who pass the examination are admitted as Fellows of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, and are entitled to use the postnominal "FRCA" after their name. [8] Fellowship may also be bestowed by election from the Council of the College. A ceremony is held annually in London at which new fellows are formally admitted. "Diplomates" are invited to attend, but are admitted as fellows whether or not they do so. The Primary FRCA examination is divided into three sections taken on two - three separate days subject to Regulation 5(c): ii) satisfies the conditions stated in Regulation 19 even if they have failed any part of the Primary FRCA examination by the maximum number of attempts allowed,The following are similar qualifications to the FRCA. They are not necessarily equivalent or interchangeable: The Final FRCA Written examination has two parts, the Final FRCA MCQ examination and the Final FRCA Constructed Response Question (CRQ) examination. Training competencies used in examination questions, are identified by the letter 'E' in the assessment column of the relevant curriculum. The curriculum competencies marked 'E' therefore make up the examination syllabus. A candidate for the Final FRCA Examination shall be exempt from passing the Primary FRCA examination (see paragraph 1(f)) who, within the seven years preceding the published start date of the sitting applied for, and only in such years as are specified, and subject to annual renewal of approval by the ETE Board: A person shall not be eligible to enter either section of the Final FRCA examination who has attempted and failed either section of the Final FRCA examination six times.However, in accordance with General Medical Council guidelines on managing examinations during the pandemic, any candidate’s first attempt at an examination in a new online format (online written with remote proctoring or online face-to-face clinical will not have that attempt counted towards the overall total six sittings, if they do not receive a pass. This temporary change applies to all FRCA examinations between August 2020 and 31 July 2021. 19 Exemptions
