The X-E3 supports both Full HD and 4K video recording. Videos can be shot with Film Simulations in-camera to easily produce creative high-resolution footage. The focus control on the Fujifilm XF 80mm f/2.8 is precise and responsive when shooting in Manual Focus. The travel distance of the focus ring is suitable and thanks to the limiter switch you are able to work within the desired focus zome. Moving towards the camera body we find the wide electronic focusing ring. This remains active during AF, enabling fine tweaks to be made, especially useful for macro photography. Focusing is down to 0.25m, a maximum magnification of 1.0x, 1:1 or life-size. On one hand, macro lenses make great portrait lens substitutes. Not only do they render lots of sharp details but they also tend to offer similar focal lengths to those considered ideal for portrait work.

The lens itself is built as a 16 element in 12 groups construction. Within this load of elements there are 3 Low dispersion elements, one “super low dispersion” element (It has something to do with minimising aberrations, but why it’s “super” I don’t know 😛 ), one aspherical element and a floating focus system. Closest to the camera body are two switches. The first is the OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) on/off. The second is the focus limiter, which gives three options, full, 0.5m – infinity and 0.25m to 0.5m. The only image with the subject reasonably parallel to the sensor is of a postage stamp - not exactly the highest resolution subject for 1:1 photography. At their fastest apertures – f/2 on the 90mm and f/2.8 on the 80mm – the 80mm is much more capable of rendering fine details, which could only be expected from a macro lens. Sharpness from the 90mm is still very acceptable though, especially if we take into account the one-stop difference in aperture. The build quality of the Fujifilm XF 80mm f/2.8 lens is exceptional and it also comes with the added benefits of optical stabilization and weather protection. The lens is composed of 16 lenses arranged in 12 groups, which includes an aspherical lens, 3 ED glass lenses, and 1 Super ED glass lens. Additionally, the front lens is coated with fluorine. The minimum focusing distance for this lens is 25 cm.

Even though I’m not a macro shooter (at all!) I think it’s probably best if I talk a little bit about the lens in this context. For macro shooting your minimum focusing distance is 25cm. You can attach either the TC-2x or TC-1.4x tele converter to get extra reach (at the cost of f-stops) – You can also use the MCEX-11 or MCEX-16 extension tubes for even closer focusing.

On the flip side however, they tend to have a slower maximum aperture than most portrait glass – f/2.8 at the very brightest – and sometimes that extreme detail rendering can reveal too many imperfections on a person’s face. These aren't facts or specifications, they are the results of my research that requires hours of photography and calculations on the resulting data. It is a specialized area of photography that involves a lot of experimentation and patience, and it also requires a good environment. Despite the X-mount being around since 2011, there are only three Fujifilm macro lenses available as of writing this article. Sorry John I confused this with a 120 (another review I’ve read very recently) so this is more like a 150 on 35mm equivalent terms. The Fujifilm XF 60mm f/2.4 is much less lens. It only gets to half life size, not life size (1:1) as this lens does, and the 60mm focal length doesn't give you as much working room between the lens and your subject. Working room is important to let you get light on your subject and not to disturb living subjects.

This isn’t a lens that’s totally reliant on being used indoors or on a tripod, either. The optical image stabilisation system is effective at suppressing handshake and the lens isn’t out of its depth when asked to shoot shallow depth of field portraits. This 80/2.8 has a lot of breathing; the image becomes much larger as focused more closely even if nothing moves. If you’re not sure yet whether to take the plunge and buy a Fujifilm X macro lens, then this is a very economical way to get started. I’ve done quite a bit of research and have come up with a list of the best extension tubes for Fujifilm:Optical construction is 16 elements in 12 groups. Laowa 65/2.8 - IF, MF, apochromatic and focuses to 2:1. Well made, apo, and extremely sharp. Similar working distances to the 80mm. Also announced is the latest development of the X Mount Lens Roadmap for developing interchangeable lenses for the X Series line of mirrorless digital cameras. The latest roadmap adds two new lenses: the ultra-wide angle zoom lens XF8-16mmF2.8 R LM WR and the telephoto prime lens XF200mmF2 R LM OIS WR. With the expansion of the high performance X Mount lens lineup, Fujifilm covers more focal lengths from ultra-wide to telephoto to support a wide range of photography styles and shooting scenarios. The 80mm macro is excellent optically but it is heavy and large, and the AF is not as fast and reliable as the 30mm lens -- at least in my experience. For less money, the B+W 62mm 010 is an excellent filter, as are the multicoated version and the basic multicoated Hoya filters, but the Hoya HD3 is the toughest and the best.
