DJI's action camera is much larger than the Go 3, but if you can handle its size, it's a great middle ground between Insta360's thumb-sized option and GoPro's 5. It's worth picking up the Mini 2-in-1 tripod if you have a GoPro mount because it comes with a compatible adapter. Unlike GoPro, or most other action cameras for that matter, you can’t simply precharge two or more batteries before you venture out and swap them to keep on trucking. However, it does have some limitations – notably the lack of a microSD card slot and removable battery and poor low-light image stabilisation.

In the box, you get a standard tripod thread mountable clamp, though if you want a GoPro-style action camera mounting plate, you'll need to pick one up separately. You can free up space by transferring clips to your phone, of course, but this operation will use up battery life on both devices.

Android devices with Snapdragon 845 and above chips, including Samsung Galaxy S9, Xiaomi Mi 8 or newer models. The Go 3 offers several for special activities, such as trail biking, urban exploration, winter sports, low-light excursions, and beach scenes. It was great to get a sense of how the Go 3 changes a filming workflow thanks to its magnetic mounting and wireless ActionPod compared to traditional action cameras. And, as with most action cameras, the list of resolutions and modes and the various limitations of the Go 3 can be bafflingly complex.

As with most action cameras, you need to be recording in daylight to make the most of it, but as long as you stick with well-lit outdoor activities – the sort of thing the Go 3 is designed to capture – you’ll see video footage that’s detailed and renders colours in a balanced, natural way – and you’ll find that the FlowState stabilisation works very well indeed. On the plus, there is a manual photography mode, so you can extend the shutter speed to help things along when the lights drop in stills, even if you can't when shooting video.

By itself, the Go 3 camera has an IPX8 waterproof rating, which means you can use it for snorkeling or swimming at depths of up to 16 feet (5 meters). The storage in the Insta360 Go 3 is fixed, so you'll have to get your content off the camera wirelessly, either through the app or by plugging it into a USB-C port on your Android phone or computer.

The DJI Action 3 is a great value battery champ that can out-last the Insta360 Go 3 and shoot at 4K resolution, while still offering magnetic mounting and it also packs a front display to help you frame your content.It also cleverly works as a remote control for the Go 3 when it is detached and can show a live view from it. As you'll be leaning on it to switch up settings and change shooting modes, if you're poolside and want a dunking buddy, the Go 3 isn't your best option. Generally speaking, if you've got your phone to hand, as with lowlight video, it will outperform the Go 3 for photos too.
