I love an author who can toss a billion main characters into one big pot and produce something delicious – and that is what happens with Rum Punch. And in slips Jackie Brown, a lengthy but under-stated film in Tarantino’s portfolio that never turned the heads of Quentin fans as much as the sizzling Kill Bill series of the action heavy Pulp Fiction. When I discovered one of my favorite films was actually a book by an author I should have been reading a long time ago (due to my Carl Hiassen fangirl status), I had to come off the cash and read it immediately.

Personalmente ho trovato appena sbozzati e dunque psicologicamente poco credibili anche i personaggi. All of this happens within the first few pages and sets the book's very entertaining plot into motion. The short story "Fire in the Hole," and three books, including Raylan, were the basis for the FX hit show Justified. After serving in the navy, he studied English literature at the University of Detroit where he entered a short story competition. Leonard's 30th novel—a thicket of sting and countersting—finds him in fine fettle, his piquant characters aging along with him but losing none of their edge as they look for that one big score before death shuts them down.

This Rum Punch adaptation moves to a different rhythm than Pulp’s rollercoaster-ride of an adventure. QT took out a lot of the peripheral content that made the book a richer experience but which wasn't necessary for making the movie a rich movie. However, please note: The image shown may have been taken from a different example of this print than that which is offered for sale. This ersatz-Fitzgerald mix of moralizing and mirror-looking (Jay McInerney shook and poured the shaker first) is very 80's—and in Tartt's strenuous version already seems dated, formulaic. Upon learning of this, Ordell pressures Jackie into intentionally misleading and stalling the police long enough for her to smuggle the remainder of his "retirement score" money into the U.

I used to live down in this area of south Florida so I appreciate his eye for detail in his descriptions of this tacky suburban hellscape. What’s strange is that many of the adaptations fell flat, except for Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight (1998) and Barry Sonnenfeld’s Get Shorty (1995) (undoubtedly the funniest of all of Leonard’s books).

Originally published in 1992 as Rum Punch, this book was then made into a very good movie by Quentin Tarantino in 1997, titled "Jackie Brown. Max Cherry, 57, has been in the trade for years but is growing tired of it, particularly because his business has been infiltrated by criminal elements. SUMMARY - 2 stars: I far prefer Elmore's earlier novels, like "Escape from Five Shadows" and "Moonshine Wars". Nice and pulpy, strong and effective writing from Elmore Leonard steers this one in the right direction. He wants to get his hands on his money and with the help of some of his nefarious friends sets up a fool proof scheme to bring it into the USA.

And oh yeah if you're thinking of getting 'Jackie Brown' I'd advise you to get 'The Switch' first as it is the first story about Melanie, Ordell and Louis Gara. Per me rimane tra i migliori di Tarantino, l’ultimo del suo periodo d’oro, prima della deriva gigiona e autoreferenziale (dal mio punto di vista, a parte i due noiosissimi e prolissi Kill Bill, sono seguiti film divertenti e piacevolmente fatti, ma senza lo smalto dei primi, perché è appunto subentrato un eccesso di gigioneria e autoreferenzialità). Forse è stato il suo meno fortunato, sigh: probabilmente troppo sobrio, troppo poco stravagante per i suoi fan.
